Family vacations should always be filled with awe-inspiring moments. One of those days is World Reef Awareness Day. On this day, it is best to celebrate the beauty of these reefs and do whatever you can to keep them thriving long into the future. To celebrate World Reef Awareness Day this year, I have determined the three destinations you must visit to see the best coral reefs.

Queensland, Australia

Australia may seem to be quite far from the US. But there is no better destination for exploring a coral reef on World Reef Awareness Day. Your entire family will love spending time in the water along the coast of Australia. The Great Barrier Reef was added as a World Heritage Site back in 1981. The reef is more than one thousand miles long.

This reef may appear to be one massive coral reef. However, it is comprised of almost three thousand individual reefs. Those coral reefs create natural habitats for all the marine life that surrounds the reef every day.

There are multiple ways to see the Great Barrier Reef. While swimming and diving near the reef are popular options, I recommend switching things up a little. Take a glass bottom boat ride or ride in a plane above the reef. They are both excellent ways to see it from a different perspective.

 

Taveuni, Fiji

The island of Taveuni in Fiji is known for its sparkling waters and abundance of marine life. Therefore, it shouldn’t be surprising that the Rainbow Reef near the island made it to my list of best coral reefs to see. I recommend you check them out during your next family vacation or on World Reef Awareness Day.

The coral structures of this reef are luminescent. Numerous marine animals are attracted to this reef. However, the marine life you will see the most are eels, sharks, and barracudas.

Mayan Riviera, Caribbean

The Mayan Riviera is where you will find the second largest coral reef in the entire world. The reef is the Great Mayan Barrier. The northern tip of the reef can be found off the Yucatan Peninsula. The reef continues to the south for almost two hundred miles.

The Great Mayan Barrier is comprised of more than one hundred different types of hard coral. At least six hundred species of fish live within this coral reef.

One of the best ways to explore this best coral reef on World Reef Awareness Day or during another vacation is to go scuba diving. It is best to scuba dive with a guide. The reason for this is the coral reef has deteriorated over the years. Guides can help you stay out of areas that should not be disturbed, so the reef can grow once again.
