Natural beauty is everywhere on the island of Maui, and you will see that beauty from anywhere you stand. While you may want to stay in one place and absorb the beauty and the ambiance, this island has so much more waiting for you. The good news is that many of the activities and adventures available on the island of Maui are outdoors. That means you can take in the gorgeous views during any family outing you take! Your kids will love spending time with you, as you conquer thrilling activities like ziplining and hiking through lava flows. And don’t forget the couple of heart-racing experiences this island is known for too. You will definitely want to add them to your list of things to do in Maui!
As you are looking at different luau options on the island of Maui, you will notice there are many more than you thought. Each luau offers something unique, but only Old Lahaina Luau sticks to the traditions of luaus past. As you listen to the music and watch the hula dancers, you will find yourself dining on some traditional Hawaiian foods. A couple of the specialties you will be served include pua’a kalua, poki’ahi, and poi.
If you really want to see awe-inspiring views, you must hike the Pipiwai Trail when you are on vacation in Maui. This trail is four miles long. As you hike along, you will pass through a bamboo forest. There are also three waterfalls along the trail. This is a slightly difficult trail, so you will want to plan on it taking at least half a day.
The twists and turns of the Road to Hana are enough to make people turn their cars around before they get too far along the road. While I can understand a person’s hesitation, this is one drive you won’t want to miss! So, if you don’t want to do the drive on your own, make sure we get you signed up with a tour company. Your tour guide will make sure you don’t miss any of the important sights, while the driver makes sure you arrive at your destination safely.
Your kids will love seeing the black sandy shoreline over at Black Sand Beach inside Wai’anapanapa State Park. There are many different hikes along this coastline, but a short hour’s hike is all you need. During that hour of walking, you will have the chance to experience the black sand between your toes, as you walk past a blowhole and sea cave.
You cannot see whales in Maui year-round, so you must plan your family vacation in Maui carefully if you want to do this activity. The whales migrate to Maui in December and stay until March. While you won’t see the thousands of humpback whales that arrive in the area, you will see quite a few of them during any whale-watching cruise you take. Your kids will love watching the whales breach and you will love seeing the baby whales next to their moms.
The Banyan Tree in Lahaina was planted back in 1873. You will find this tree in Courthouse Square. It looks like the Banyan Tree is multiple trees, but it is only a single tree that is all connected. One of the best things you can do in Maui is grab a photo of your family standing in front of this tree. You can do all sorts of poses in front of the tree, but a fun one might be to intertwine your arms, legs, and bodies, so your family looks connected like the tree.
One of the best things to do in Maui is to watch the water escape from the Nakalele Blowhole. You will find this blowhole over at Nakalele Point, which is in West Maui. Simply walk along the Nakalele Blowhole trail for approximately one mile to reach the blowhole. The water that shoots upwards is from the ocean and it can reach heights of fifty feet. When you are in this area, you must also keep an eye out for the heart shaped rock. The search will keep your kids busy along the trail, so they won’t notice how far they are actually walking!
The Seven Sacred Pools are also known as the Pools of Ohe’o. These natural pools, and the cascading waterfalls that fill them, are surrounded by bamboo trees and lush rainforest. You will love the quiet and serenity in the area, while your kids will love swimming in the water every chance they get. It is best to visit these seven pools on a nice sunny day because any rain will have the area closed off to people.
If your family has never surfed before, you will want to take surfing lessons when you are on vacation in Maui. Your instructors will get you started with the basics on land and then you will paddle out to catch the perfect wave. Kaanapali is the best place to start surfing because the waves are gentle.
These are the best things to do in Maui during your next family vacation. I know you won’t want to add all these things to your Maui itinerary, but a couple will definitely make your list! I can share other activities and adventures with you once I know a little more about the likes and dislikes of your family. The result will be a family vacation in Maui filled with memories you will remember for a lifetime!
