There are quite a few ancient ruins around the world. Each one offers a glimpse into the past. You can visit any of them during a family vacation. However, you may not be aware that there are some underwater ruins that are quite amazing too. Today, I want to share the underwater ruins you should visit during future family vacations. Each one will allow you to make memories with your family.
One of the oldest underwater cities in the world can be found in Greece. The lost city of Pavlopetri was rediscovered in 2011. Until that time, rumors were the only thing swirling around about this city.
If you were to dive into the waters near Greece to see Pavlopetri, you would find approximately fifteen buildings. Each building is at a depth of about ten to twelve feet. The entire city is said to be within a two-acre area.
It is thought that this underwater ruin city is five thousand years old. However, there are thoughts that this city is much older.
For years, people have been searching for the lost city of Atlantis. Nowadays, researchers are thinking that Bimini Road in the Bahamas may lead them to Atlantis after all these years.
These underwater ruins were discovered back in 1968. Joseph Mason Valentine was diving in the water when he discovered a paved roadway at the bottom. Over time, he discovered artificial ruins in the same area.
There are some disagreements as to whether this road is natural or artificial. It will take more research before the real answer is known.
It is also important to point out that another person discovered a pyramid in the area of Berry Island. So, the Bimini Road may actually lead to a sunken city. Time will tell if that city is Atlantis.
If you have always wanted to visit Malta, you may want to take a family vacation there to see these underwater ruins. The temples were discovered in 1999. It is believed they are the Temples of Gebel Gol-Bahar. These temples are located approximately two to three miles from the coast of St. Julian.
No official studies of these ruins have been completed since they were discovered. So, it is unknown how old they are. It is also not confirmed if they are really the Temples of Gebel Gol-Bahar.
There are a few structures in this area, as well as cart ruts. Those ruts confirm that this could be a city that was once above water.
It is also important to note that a few people believe these ruins could actually be Atlantis.
Over in Dwarka, India, you can dive into the water to see The Lost City. This is one of the most fascinating underwater ruins in the world.
It is thought that The Lost City is approximately nine thousand years old. Although, that still must be confirmed.
The National Institute of Ocean Technology surveyed the region between 1999 and 2001. At that time, they discovered columns, temples, and stepped buildings.
India seems to be the spot to vacation if you want to experience some of the best underwater ruins in the world. The Temples of Mahabalipuram were discovered in 2001. Walls and fallen pillars were discovered. Those pillars are leading researchers to think this area might be part of the myths of the Seven Pagodas.
You don’t need to travel too far from home to see underwater ruins. In Lake Michigan, archaeologists have seen a Stonehenge-like structure. The archaeologists were scanning the lake for shipwrecks and discovered this structure instead.
No one has stated exactly where this Stonehenge structure is located. So, you may need to do a little research on your own to find it.
Over in Fuxian Lake in China, strange carvings have been discovered. There are numerous legends about a lost city in this area. Those carvings match what has been passed down through generations.
Divers have also discovered thirty buildings and forty handmade stone relics in Fuxian Lake. It is unknown as to which lost city this is, but researchers have dubbed it “China’s Atlantis”.
Port Royal is a city in Jamaica that is known to have sunk during an earthquake in 1907. Researchers are using this underwater ruin to learn more about other underwater cities from the past.
Since this city seemed to sink under the water overnight, researchers are learning how other cities did the same thing. This means we may be close to finding more lost cities in other locations around the world.
These are the 8 underwater ruins you should consider visiting during your next family vacation. Each one offers a unique perspective underwater, while also offering amazing activities on land.
