You can all visit the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the National Museum of the US Air Force, Cedar Point Amusement Park, and so much more. Today, let’s celebrate National Ohio Day by learning a few fun facts about this state. - Ohio is known as the Buckeye State.
- Seven Presidents were born in Ohio. They were Grant, Hayes, Garfield, Benjamin Harrison, McKinley, Taft, and Harding. Another President, William Henry Harrison, was born in Virginia but settled in Ohio. So, many people also consider him an Ohio President.
- The National Football League was founded in Canton, Ohio in 1920.
- Twenty-four astronauts are from Ohio. Two of those astronauts are John Glenn and Neil Armstrong.
- Dum Dums were created by the Akron Candy Company in 1924. Spangler Candy purchased them in 1953. They are currently made in Bryan, OH.
- The Troll Hole Museum is located in Alliance, Ohio. They have almost three thousand Troll Dolls to look at.
- The Cincinnati Red Stockings were the first professional baseball team back in 1869. Their name came from the red knee socks they wore.
- Thomas Edison was born in Milan, Ohio.
- Life Savers Candy was invented by Clarence Crane in Garrettsville in 1912.
- Ermal Fraze invented the pop-top can in the early 1960s in Kettering. He was at a picnic and forgot his can opener! He decided he needed a solution for when that happened again.
- The first electric signal light was in Cleveland in August 1923.
- The first emergency ambulance service was founded in 1865 in Cincinnati.
- The cash register was invented by James Jacob Ritty in 1879. It was originally called the mechanical money drawer.
- Many famous people were born in Ohio. They include Clark Gable, Dean Martin, Marilyn Monroe, Paul Newman, Annie Oakley, and Martin Sheen.
- Many movies have been filmed in Ohio too. A couple includes A Christmas Story, Spiderman 3, The Shawshank Redemption, and Rain Man.
- One of the laws still on the books in Ohio states that it is illegal to own a bathtub!
- Another law states you must have a hunting license to catch mice in Cleveland.
- Over in Columbus, Ohio, it is illegal to sell cornflakes on Sundays.
- The official state bug of Ohio is the ladybug.
- The official Ohio state beverage is tomato juice.
