Does your family love the spookiness of Halloween? Do you all love ghosts, goblins, and ghouls? Are you ready to scream a little during some Halloween fun? Well, if you answered yes to any of these questions, I may have the perfect family vacation for you! I have discovered a few of the best Halloween destinations around the world. You can easily travel to them to celebrate Halloween during a family vacation.
Halloween in Oaxaca isn’t celebrated the same as it is here in the US. Down there, the locals celebrate the Day of the Dead. This carnival-type celebration begins on October 31st. It is three days long. During this time, you will see hundreds of altars, skulls, flowers, and skeletons on the streets. The best parties are held in the Zócalo main square.
Why not take a family vacation to Transylvania to celebrate Halloween one year?! Bran Castle is where Vlad the Impaler supposedly lived at one point. Plus, this castle was used as inspiration when Bram Stoker wrote his scary book, Dracula. This castle can be scary at any time of the year. But Halloween brings the Halloween Monster Party. It is guaranteed to give you chills.
You don’t even need to leave the US to experience Halloween at its best. Sleepy Hollow is a small village right on the banks of the Hudson River. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving was based in this village. So, to say they go all out during Halloween is an understatement.
Start your eerie adventure at the Old Dutch Burying Ground cemetery. Then head to Lyndhurst Castle to learn about the spirits from popular movies. Don’t forget to check out Blaze before you leave. It is an exhibit that contains more than seven thousand jack-o-lanterns.
Some people believe that the Halloween holiday came from the Gaelic festival of Samhain. That festival marked the end of harvest and the beginning of the darkest days of the year. I recommend attending the Banks of the Foyle Halloween Carnival. This carnival is held for nine days. During this time, you can watch costumed parades, take a guided ghost tour, and visit haunted houses.
New Orleans is another ghostly city right here in the US. One of the best places to be for Halloween is in the French Quarter. Take a couple of ghost tours of the city cemeteries. Attend the Krewe of Boo parade. And don’t forget about the Voodoo Music and Arts Experience. A little time in New Orleans is just what the spooky doctor ordered!
The very biggest Halloween celebration in the US, though, is held in Salem, Massachusetts, every year. Every year, this city hosts the Salem Haunted Happenings throughout the entire month of October. The Grand Parade, costume balls, haunted houses, and theatrical presentations are only the beginning of the festivities. You won’t want to skip the Salem Witch Museum, the Witch Mansion, and the Witch House during your visit. You may even want to take a historic tour of Salem during your visit.
These are the best Halloween destinations for your family vacation. Any one of these Halloween destinations is guaranteed to give you chills and possibly nightmares. Just remember, you must book your family vacation early if you don’t want to miss out on the best these areas have to offer.
