There are hundreds, if not thousands, of destinations to visit in Europe. You can easily start to check them off your list by taking family vacations. However, how do you know if you are missing a must-see European destination? Most of the time, you won’t. But I have discovered a few European destinations that most travelers miss. I thought I would share those with you today, so you can make sure you don’t miss out on the opportunity to see some of the best places in Europe.
Castles, bagpipes, and rugged beauty are to be expected when you take a family vacation in Scotland. However, most people choose to stay near Edinburgh. And they completely forget about amazing destinations like the Outer Hebrides.
These incredible islands are protected from development. This means you won’t find lots of touristy attractions in the Outer Hebrides. Instead, you will discover The Callanish Stones. These are standing stone rings. They are fifteen feet high and were constructed around 2900 BC.
If you are interested in castles, check out Lews, Kisimul, or the Castle Grounds in Stornoway. The Gearrannon Blackhouse Village will allow you to learn all about crofting and peat cutting. Oh, and you can’t leave out a trip to the Isle of Harris Distillery. It is the best place to drink the local gin.
If you can’t get enough of castles, you may want to see some other European castles during your family vacation. I can make those arrangements for you!
It is usually all about Transylvania and Bran Castle when it comes to family vacations in Romania. You can definitely still visit there. Simply add the town of Brasov to your must-see European destinations. This town is full of medieval Saxon walls, as well as council squares. One of the first things you should check out is the Black Church. Strada Sforii, or String Street, is another popular place. This street is only between forty-four and fifty-three inches wide.
One of the oldest cities in Norway is Stavanger. The oldest section of the city is Gamle Stavanger. It is full of wooden houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. The colorful buildings on Øvre Holmegate are also worthy of a visit.
A vacation in this area of Norway in July will have you attending a food festival if you time your visit right. A jazz festival is held in May, while a chamber music festival is held every August. Make sure you take your camera because there is also street art everywhere in the Stavanger Region of Norway.
Dubrovnik and Split are the two cities that get the most visitors in Croatia. This could be due to the beauty of the area. Or the fact that there are numerous Game of Thrones movie locations scattered throughout those cities. All of that usually makes travelers like yourself miss out on the small fishing village of Novigrad.
This is an excellent place to visit during a family vacation when you want lots of downtimes. A stone clock tower stands in the central square. You can shop in the local stores, dine at the local restaurants, and walk along the sandy beach. Stay out late one night to watch the stars shimmer in the water below.
Matera is located in southeastern Italy. The city is known for its Baroque churches, palaces, and cave grottoes. History is everywhere in Matera. You can easily learn about it all when you talk to the locals.
You can actually stay in a cave while visiting this city in Italy. When you are not enjoying your cave room, you can head over to Matera Cathedral, the MUSMA art museum, or the Casa Grotta de Vico Solitaria.
These are the best European destinations travelers always miss. Don’t let your family miss out on these incredible areas during your future family vacations. Add them to your list today so you don’t forget that sometimes the hidden gems offer the best memories.
