Does anyone in your family love history? Do you spend time trying to arrange a stop at a historical landmark during your family vacations? Well, if you do, I have discovered a few historical landmarks you may have missed. Maybe you simply haven’t been to the destinations where these historical landmarks are located. Or you just haven’t heard about them and didn’t know they existed. No matter the reason, I am sharing a little information about a few of the historical landmarks you’ve missed during family vacations.
Malta is one of the top family destinations in the Mediterranean. And yet, most people have no idea that there are ancient ruins located within the country. The area of Mnajdra is a megalithic temple complex. It is located in southern Malta.
These ancient ruins are thought to have been around five thousand six hundred years old. This means they are even older than the Pyramids of Giza.
All the temples within these ruins were used for different purposes. One was used for healing and fertility. Another for religion. And yet another for astronomy. Visit Mnajdra in Malta during your next family vacation and see how incredible ancient times truly were.
Everyone heads to Machu Picchu when they travel to Peru for a family vacation. However, Kuélap is a fabulous area in the northern region of the country. You can hike to this ancient hilltop or ride up on a newly constructed cable car.
Kuélap was built by the Chachapoyas people long before Machu Picchu was even a thought. When you arrive at the top of the hill, you will see approximately five hundred huts that sit in ruin. These huts were made from limestone and have intricate carvings. Amongst all the huts are llamas that graze in the lush meadows.
Very few people remember that the Roman Empire reached as far as Spain at one point in time. A family vacation in Mérida will have you see some of the best Roman ruins in the country. There are numerous ancient buildings scattered amongst the modern ones in this city. You won’t find many other places in the world where a Roman temple sits directly next to a bar.
Take the time to check out Casa de Mitreo and its mosaic floor, as well as the Hippodrome.

A visit to Angkor Wat will have you see the most popular temple in Cambodia. However, a drive two hours to the north will have you visiting the most fascinating one. Koh Ker has recently been excavated. There are currently around twenty monuments that can be seen.
Hopefully, more of this site will be uncovered, so we can continue to learn about the people who lived here.
These are the historical landmarks you may have missed during past family vacations. Don’t worry if you have because you now realize how incredible these landmarks truly are. And that means you can easily add them to a future family vacation itinerary.
