Out of all the Hawaiian Islands, Molokai is the one that people seem to ignore the most. I am not sure why so many people skip Molokai when planning their family vacation in Hawaii. After all, this island has beautiful sights, fascinating locals, and fewer touristy crowds. Today, I am going to share a few of the reasons you should add a family vacation in Molokai to your travel list.
Above, I mentioned you will find fewer crowds on the island of Molokai. That means you will also find lots of areas filled with tranquility. The quiet is perfect for enjoying time with your family as you all make memories you will cherish forever.
Not sure if Molokai is the perfect island for your next family vacation? Find out which Hawaiian Island is best for your family!
Yes, you will find Hawaiian culture on all the Hawaiian Islands. However, some of the other islands have created touristy cultures that travelers enjoy. If you want to participate in the most authentic Hawaiian cultures, I recommend taking a vacation in Molokai.
One of my favorite ways to experience this culture in Hawaii is by going to one of the cultural festivals held throughout the year.
One of the most impressive natural attractions on the Hawaiian Islands is Halawa Valley. This area is not only stunning but also full of history. It is thought that this area was where the very first settlement in Hawaii was located. Archaeological evidence shows that people were living in Halawa Valley in 650 AD.
Part of this valley is on private land. However, there are plenty of trails located on public lands. Many of those trails lead to temple ruins and rushing waterfalls.
Your family cannot vacation in Molokai and not spend time at the beach. Halawa Beach Park is one of the best beach areas to visit. There are two incredible beaches there. They are Kawili Beach and Kama’alaea Beach.
It is best to visit these beaches during the summer when the water is calm. During the winter, the water currents are quite strong, and swimming is considered dangerous.
Another excellent beach in Molokai is Papokahu Beach. This is one of the largest white sand beaches on the Hawaiian Islands. There are plenty of amenities at this beach, including restrooms and picnic tables.
Another magnificent destination to visit on Molokai is the Kamakou Preserve. Your family will see hundreds of unique Hawaiian plants throughout this preserve. Plenty of native animals and birds live in the Kamakou Preserve too.
One of the best ways to fully appreciate this area of the island is to head out on a hike.
Your family will discover it is simple to spend time out in nature while on vacation in Molokai. One of my favorite places to go is Pala’au State Park. Make sure you take the time to visit the overlook to see views of Kalaupapa.
That area is where people who had leprosy were sent many years ago. Some of the younger generations from those families still live on the Kalaupapa Peninsula. You cannot currently visit this area like you were able to in the past. If that rule changes in the future, it is worth a few hours of your time to meet the families who live there.
Okay, so the main reason why everyone should take the time to go on vacation in Molokai is the delicious hot bread. You can purchase Molokai hot bread at Kanemitsu Bakery. This hot bread contains yummy fillings. You can purchase it filled with everything from cream cheese to strawberries or blueberries.
You can purchase this hot bread on the other islands in Hawaii. However, it never seems to taste as good as it does when you eat it in Molokai!
These are the main reasons you need to take a family vacation in Molokai. There are many other reasons, though, and you will discover many of them once you arrive on the island. I can personalize your family vacation in Molokai so you do everything you want to while away from home.
