The Best Times to Vacation in Belize for Multigenerational Families

The best time to vacation in Belize is the dry season. This is between late November and the middle of May. During this time, you will discover lots of sunshine, calm seas, and comfortable temperatures.

The only downside to vacationing in Belize during the dry season is everything books quickly. It is recommended you book early to ensure you don’t miss out on your dream multigenerational vacation in Belize.

If you choose to vacation in Belize during the off-season, or wet season, you won’t be surrounded by crowds of people. Yes, you will see more rainfall from June to October. But that only means the landscapes will be lush, as you explore with the people you love.

It is important to note that hurricane season is from August to October. Belize is in the hurricane belt. So, travel during these months can be unpredictable. I highly recommend travel insurance if you do choose to book your Belize family vacation during hurricane season. Although, I will always recommend travel insurance, because you never know what will happen.

Tips for Flying to Belize

There is only one international airport in Belize. So, it is simple to determine where you will be landing upon your arrival. But I am sharing many other tips in this Belize travel guide for families.

Approach to the Airport

Upon your approach to the airport in Belize, you will want to appreciate the gorgeous views of the coast and nearby mangrove swamps. Once you see Belize River, you may want to brace yourself and make sure your seatbelt is tight. The reason for this is the runway is shorter than most international runways. As soon as the plane hits the runway, the pilot will turn on the reverse thrust and brakes. Don’t worry, your pilot will be quite used to this process, because they will have done this dozens of times prior to your flight.

Deplaning in Belize

Since the international airport in Belize is so small, you won’t deplane like you normally do. There are no jetway bridges. So, you will need to deplane via a stairway on the tarmac.

If you choose to take a carry-on bag with you for your family vacation in Belize, you may want to check it prior to boarding. Especially if it is on the larger side since it can be difficult to carry down the stairs.

Immigration Check In

After you deplane, you will stop at the immigration check-in. There is paperwork you will be given on the plane to fill out. I recommend filling it out on the plane, so you can immediately get into the line on the left to check in.

Once you show your passport and paperwork, the immigration officer will give you a visa that is valid for thirty days if you are from the US, Canada, or the UK. While I am sharing these guidelines in this Belize travel guides for families, I will go over all the requirements with you while I am planning your vacation. This will ensure you know exactly what you will need when you arrive in Belize.

Baggage Claim

There are only two baggage claim carousels at the airport. Those carousels can get busy if more than one flight has arrived around the same time. And if it took you longer to clear immigration, your luggage may have been removed and set to the side already.

As soon as you have your baggage, you will need to clear customs. This usually isn’t too complicated since most people do not have anything to declare when they are visiting. Simply answer the person’s questions and you will be ready to continue with your family vacation in Belize.

There are so many ways you can personalize an itinerary for a Belize family vacation. The itinerary I am sharing here is only one of many options. However, it will give you an idea of what is possible for your multigenerational vacation in Belize.

Days 1-3: Hopkins

Hopkins is a charming Garifuna village tucked away on the southeastern coast of Belize. It is known for its laidback vibe, welcoming community, and rich cultural traditions. This village is not as touristy as other areas of the country. This is good news for families who are trying to slow down and connect with each other.

Jaguar Preserve Night Hike

While you may be slightly tired from your plane ride, everyone in your family will be more than ready to start exploring! The Jaguar Preserve Night Hike is an incredible way to see some of the nocturnal animals in Belize. Plus, as the only jaguar preserve in the world, you’ll experience something many others never will.

Imagine seeing the fresh tracks of the elusive jaguar, puma, jaguarundi, and ocelot. Now imagine seeing one, or even all, of these animals out in the wild. Don’t worry, your guide will make sure you stay far away from these wild animals.

Enjoy every moment of your time in the lush forest, as you listen to crickets and birds. The moon will try its best to shine through the trees. It will create just enough light to make this a magical experience you will all talk about forever.

South Water Reef Snorkeling

Your next family adventure will involve heading fourteen miles offshore to the Cayes. Near the Cayes is the extraordinary Belize Barrier Reef. It is the longest unbroken barrier reef system in the world.

There are two different snorkeling sites near this barrier reef. At each one, you will have time to explore not only the reef, but the marine life swimming around. You never know what types of marine life you will see once you jump into the water.

Placencia Village

After a long day out in the water, you will be more than ready to relax at dinnertime. However, you will want to find a little energy to explore this unique cultural village.

Begin your visit with a walk on the infamous Placencia boardwalk. Local shops, artisan booths, and local restaurants line the boardwalk.

Once you have explored a little, it will be time to indulge on some Creole-Caribbean fusion foods. Choosing between all the local restaurants will be difficult. But you will eventually decide which one is offering exactly what you are craving at the moment.

Just don’t forget to save room for a little dessert. I recommend shopping after dinner and then grabbing gourmet ice cream or gelato before heading back to your resort for the night.

Oh, and if you don’t want to check out Placencia Village after your snorkeling adventures, you can easily wait until the next day to visit. After all, it will give you even more time to explore this beautiful area together.

Days 4-7: Ambergris Caye

Ambergris Caye is the country’s largest island. You will find this island off the northeastern coast of Belize. The main town on Ambergris Caye is San Pedro. You can spend as much time as you want there or on other parts of the island.

Ambergris Caye will check all the boxes on your list for your multigenerational vacation. Your family can explore the island using a golf cart. Snorkeling near the reef is another option. You may also choose to relax on the beach soaking up the Caribbean breeze.

Lobster Festival

The month of July brings Lobster Festivals throughout the country of Belize. On Ambergris Caye, you can attend the Lobster Festival in San Pedro. This festival usually lasts for two weeks.

During the Lobster Festival in Belize, you should expect to eat lobster in all forms. I’m talking about grilled tails, kebabs, ceviche, and even lobster-infused cocktails.

Take the time to visit the chef pop-ups, beach parties, and street fairs. And don’t forget the lively Block Party on Tarpon Street at the end of the festival.

Belizean Chocolate Company

The Belizean Chocolate Company was founded in 2007. The founders of this business source fair-trade organic cacao from small family farms. The sugar they use is from Yucatec Maya farmers.

You can purchase all types of chocolate from here. Consider buying chocolate bars, truffles, cocoa powder, brownie mixes, hot cocoa mix, and even chocolate body products.

Educational chocolate classes are offered. When your family attends these classes, you will all learn the bean-to-bar process. Of course, no class is complete without a taste test. It is best to book these experiences in advance of your Belize family vacation. This will ensure you don’t miss out on this tasty adventure!

Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley

A snorkeling tour of the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley is exactly what your family will need at this point of your Belize vacation.

Your first stop will be the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. The boat will glide through the vibrant coral reefs. Amongst those coral reefs are colorful fish and sea turtles. Take a few pictures to remember this family friendly activity in Belize.

After your coral reef adventure, it will be time to explore Shark Ray Alley. Your time in this area will be spent in the water, surrounded by gentle nurse sharks and stingrays. Enjoy the experience, as you all have fun making memories together.

Day 8: Caye Caulker

Caye Caulker is a charming limestone coral island. It is located twenty miles to the northeast of Belize City. This island is quite small. So, you can easily walk almost everywhere you want to go with your family.

The Split

The Split is a channel that divides this island. Your family can swim in parts of the Split. Or you can simply watch the stingrays swimming in the water.

Kayaking and Paddleboarding

The water in the lagoons is calm. That means you can easily go kayaking or paddleboarding together as a family. Rentals are available on the island. So, you won’t have an excuse to skip this family friendly activity in Belize.

Spot Wildlife

The docks near the Iguana Reef Inn are the perfect place to see tarpons, stingrays, conches, and seahorses in the water. Dusk is the best time to see all these creatures.

Day 9-11: Cayo Region

The Cayo Region is tucked away in western Belize. It’s the ideal destination for curious families. Especially those who want a blend of adventure, culture, and nature. Most of the activities in this region can be tailored to every interest and energy level.

ATM Cave Tour

ATM is Actun Tunichil Muknal. This cave system is approximately five kilometers long. It is full of skeletons, ceramics, and stoneware from the Mayan civilization.

One of the most popular skeletons in the cave is “The Crystal Maiden”. The remains are believed to have belonged to a male adolescent.

An ATM Cave Tour is a full day activity. It requires a forty-five-minute hike from the parking lot to the entrance of the cave. You will all need to swim through the entrance of the cave. Once you are inside, climbing will be necessary to reach the different chambers.

Explore Other Mayan Ruins

Xunantunich, Cahal Pech, and Caracol are three other Mayan Ruins you can explore during your multigenerational vacation in Belize. Xunantunich is the most family friendly. You will access this site via ferry. The most difficult part is the easy climb to El Castillo to see the amazing views.
