Do you have kids who have loved listening to you read fairy tales to them? Boys who love knights? Girls who love princesses? If you do, then you may want to visit at least one of the fairy tale castles I have discovered during your next family vacation. Some of these castles inspired the castles you have seen in movies. I recommend you visit them and see what dreams come true in the future. You will be surprised by how well you connect with your kids while visiting a fairy tale castle.
Almost everyone has heard about Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany. The reason for this is this castle was the inspiration for Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland.
This castle is on a cliff in the Alps. It overlooks a sparkling lake.
The construction of this castle began in 1868. The owner, King Ludwig II of Bavaria, died before it was completed in the late 1800s.
Thankfully, the castle is still open to the public. Therefore, everyone can have their own fairy tale experience. Talk about an amazing place to make a few memories with the kids!
Another popular castle is Bran Castle in Romania. It is said that this castle inspired Bram Stoker to write Dracula. However, Stoker never visited this castle during his lifetime.
This castle was constructed during the 14th century. It is located deep within a dark forest, which is perfect for all those dark fairy tale stories.
The downside to visiting this castle is the focus inside the museum is on the modern Romanian family. Therefore, you won’t experience much of the history of this castle. You won’t find anything about Dracula, either.
The beautiful fairy tale castle of Eilean Donan inspired the castle used in Pixar’s movie Brave. You can only access this castle via a footbridge that is over Loch Duich. Don’t worry, the loch ness monster, or any other monster, doesn’t live in the water!
This castle wasn’t preserved like some of the other fairy tale castles in the world. Eilean Donan was in ruins for about two hundred years. Finally, in 1932, Eilean Donan was restored to its original beauty.
Bagpipe music plays in the background in this castle. It is the perfect backdrop for all the photos you will take and the conversations you will have.
Over in Switzerland, you will see Château de Chillon sitting right on the banks of an island on Lake Geneva. This castle guarded the trading routes between northern and southern Europe.
During your visit, learn how the castle was used as a Roman fortress and medieval dungeon. There is plenty of history inside this castle. Make sure you spend a little time sitting on the window benches during your visit. They offer extraordinary views of the lake.
These are the amazing fairy tale castles you should consider visiting during a future family vacation. Each castle will start conversations with your kids as they remember all the details in the fairy tales you have read them in the past. Those conversations will create memories you will remember long into the future. If you are interested, I can plan to have your family visit other castles in Europe during your vacation.
