Do you have a bunch of foodies in your house? If you are one of the lucky parents that do, you will be thrilled with all the foods you can try while on a family vacation. If you aren’t, well, there’s nothing stopping you from devouring these foods on your own! Whether you choose to roam the streets of Paris, wander the vineyards in Tuscany, or take a river cruise in Germany, there will always be new foods to try. Today, I am going to focus on all the yummy foods to try during a river cruise in Germany.
Okay, so Wurst is a sausage. There are dozens of wurst variations in Germany. If you want to stick with the basics, start by eating a bratwurst during a river cruise in Germany. A bratwurst is basically ground pork and spices.
If you are ready to be a little more adventurous with your eating, try rost bratwurst and currywurst. Or one of the other wursts you come across during your vacation in Germany.
If desserts are more your thing, take a few bites of apfelstrudel. I guarantee you won’t be able to stop with those few bites, though!
This dessert is made with apples and thin pastry, as well as sugar and cinnamon. Some people will add raisins, too, so ask first if you are not a fan of raisins. It is best to eat apfelstrudel warm. Although, cold will work too.
The brezel in Germany is also called brezeln. It is basically a pretzel that is served as a snack or side dish. They are popular to eat in bars while drinking a beer. The best brezels are soft and white with salt.
Schnitzel is a thin cut of meat that has been breaded before being cooked. There are many different versions of schnitzel dishes. The most popular version is the Weiner schnitzel. It is breaded veal served with a fried egg on top.
This simple dish is basically noodles covered in mild cheese with roasted onions mixed in. Kaesespaetzle is usually made to order. Therefore, it is usually very hot when placed in front of you at the table.
These are German fries, or what we know as fried potatoes. Potatoes, bacon, and onion are all fried together in butter until everything is nice and crispy. Even your pickiest eaters shouldn’t have anything to complain about when it comes to bratkartoffeln.
To stay with a potato theme, how about kartoffelknödel? These potato dumplings are made with potatoes, seasonings, and croutons. The dumplings are boiled before being served with different sauces.
Baurenbrot is farmer’s bread in Germany. This hearty bread is made from rye flour and a German bread spice that includes caraway and fennel. This is the perfect bread to eat when you know you need to fill up for a day of exploring during your river cruise in Germany.
These are some of the amazing foods you should try during a river cruise in Germany. Hopefully, you have food lovers in your family because it will make eating these dishes much easier. If you don’t, let them eat the foods you usually eat while you choose to eat these yummy German foods during your family vacation! There are other European river cruise routes to choose from if Germany doesn’t interest you. We can always discuss those options instead.
