Wintertime in Switzerland and Finland means lots of time outside in the snow. Your whole family will be thrilled with all the skiing, snowboarding, and other bucket list items available in these two countries during the winter months. Today, I am sharing an itinerary that will show you some of the possibilities available to your family during a winter vacation in Switzerland and Finland. Your itinerary may look completely different once I start personalizing it for your family. But that’s okay, because my goal is to always make sure your family has the adventures they want while away from home.
Upon landing at the airport in Geneva, you will be whisked away to your hotel by a private driver. After getting settled in your hotel room, you will meet your guide for a walking tour. This entire tour is inspired by cheese and chocolate. So, be prepared to eat samples everywhere you stop along the way.
During this tour, you will see sights that include Old Town, Rhone River, St. Peter’s Cathedral, and Halle de Rive.
Your second day in Switzerland will begin with your family being driven to the vineyards of Lavaux. This is the most famous wine growing region in western Switzerland. Walk along the vineyards before learning about wine production and indulging in a wine tasting.
After your wine tasting, you will be taken to the Lausanne train station to begin your journey to Zermatt. When you arrive in Zermatt, a driver will be waiting to transport you to your hotel for the evening.
A day in the mountains is exactly what your family will need during your vacation in Switzerland. The cogwheel train will take you to four different stops until you reach the station at the Gornergrat summit. From the summit, you will have stunning views of Matterhorn, Monte Rosa Massif, and Dufourspitze.
You can plan this day any way you wish. However, I do recommend arranging to pick up snowboard rentals, so you can do a little snowboarding on these mountains.
This is the day you will see most of the Swiss Alps, as you ride on the Glacier Express Train. This train travels over two hundred ninety-one bridges. It also passes through ninety-one tunnels. And takes you over the Oberalp Pass at more than six thousand feet in the air.
You will experience all that during your eight-hour journey from Zermatt to St. Moritz. Use this time on the train to talk amongst yourselves and begin to relive some of the memories you have already made on this amazing vacation in Switzerland.
You don’t have much time to spend in St. Moritz. So, you may want to get up early to see a few of the sights before boarding the train to Zurich.
Once you arrive in Zurich, you will have the evening to yourself to explore, as you stretch your legs.
A little more travel is necessary today. In order to switch from your vacation in Switzerland to your vacation in Finland, you must take a quick flight. Don’t worry, the flight will be totally worth it for this evening’s adventure.
After all, your family won’t mind heading out on snowmobiles in Finland to see the Northern Lights. At one point, you will stop by a bonfire to warm up with a hot drink.
It is nearing the end of your family vacation in Finland. Today’s family adventure will take you to a remote reindeer farm. You will see Lapland reindeer up close. You may also have the opportunity to learn how to handle a reindeer sleigh.
If you don’t want to do that, it’s okay. Just make sure you do sit in the sleigh to go on a ride through the forest, as the reindeer are leading the way.
This evening will then be spent heading out to check out the Northern Lights once again. Your family will never get bored when seeing these dancing lights in the sky.
It is the last day of your vacation in Finland. Hopefully you have a slightly later flight, so you can pick up a few last-minute souvenirs and say goodbye. Then it will be time to board the plane to go back home until it is time for your next family vacation.
This eight-day itinerary for an amazing vacation in Switzerland and Finland shows you what is possible for your next family vacation. I can personalize your family’s itinerary, so it includes everything you all want to do while you are traveling the world. Therefore, don’t think you are stuck doing everything that is on this itinerary. I can offer many other options, when we begin to discuss your next family trip.
