Have you ever wondered what the best historical destinations for solo women travelers were? As a travel advisor, I can tell you that there are so many people who are interested in history. And yes, most of these people fell in love with the subject long after they graduated from high school and college! In my opinion, traveling and learning history firsthand is a lot more fun than sitting and learning about it from a textbook or a lecture. Anyway, today I am sharing the best historical destinations for solo women travelers. I want you to start imagining walking through history in destinations that include Petra in Jordan, Athens in Greece, Vienna in Austria, and Cusco in Peru. These historical cities for solo travel will have you experiencing what life was like decades ago.
If you want to have one of the best female solo travel experiences, fly to Petra, Jordan. This country is known for its warm hospitality, as well as being a safe destination.
Plus, the ancient Nabatean city of Petra offers you the opportunity to see the world’s most extraordinary archaeological sites.
Start your history-focused travel by visiting the Royal Tombs. These tombs were intricately carved into the cliffs. Amazing views can be seen while you explore Ad-Deir. This monastery is larger than Petra’s infamous monument, the Treasury.
Although, that doesn’t mean you should skip the Treasury, as you walk through Siq. This narrow gorge offers you the chance to reflect on the past, as you enjoy the unique experience.
I highly recommend one of the historical tours for solo travelers when you choose to vacation in Athens. After all, you won’t want to miss even a second of the rich history this historical destination has to offer you as a solo woman traveler.
During your historical tour, you will see many of the most popular sights in Athens. Those historical sites will include the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and the Temple of Olympian Zeus.
Don’t get too tired while going back in time. After all, you will need your energy to explore Ancient Agora. This is where ancient philosophers like Socrates taught their students.
As a solo woman traveler, you know shopping will be part of your vacation in Athens. The Plaka District is the perfect place to wander around for gifts and souvenirs. Walk along the charming streets and pop into the local shops. Don’t forget to stay caffeinated and well-fed during this adventure by visiting a local café or restaurant.
Think you can’t travel solo as a female? Think again!
One of the best historical cities for solo travel is Vienna, Austria. This city is safe to explore on your own. Even if you are just walking from museum to museum. Or one historical site to another.
One of the best parts about this historical destination for solo women travelers is you can experience classical music in between historical adventures.
A visit to the Schönbrunn Palace is a must when you are on vacation in Vienna. This is the summer residence of the Habsburg monarchs. You will learn a lot about the history of their monarchy during your visit.
A stroll through Belvedere Palace, as well as the gardens there, will have you imagining living in a castle yourself. While you might not be able to construct your own castle back home, it will be fun to pretend you could live in a castle one day!
Oh, and don’t forget to see Klimt’s masterpiece, “The Kiss”, while you are at this palace.
You will quickly learn that you can explore numerous castles while on vacation in Vienna. While you won’t be able to see them all, Hofburg Palace should also be on your list of must-see castles. Especially the Sisi Museum, which is dedicated to Empress Elisabeth.
And if you are interested in classical music, or even if you are not, a night at the Vienna State Opera is a must. It is one of the most famous opera houses in the world and quite a sight to see.
Check out these other amazing destinations for women traveling solo.
Cusco used to be the former capital of the Inca Empire. This is why it is near the top of my list of best historical destinations for solo women travelers.
You will be amazed at how many archaeological wonders you will see during your vacation in Cusco. Plus, it is an excellent destination to stay if you have been dreaming of exploring Machu Picchu.
Machu Picchu is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. But there are so many other things to see and do while on a solo vacation in Cusco.
Start by exploring the Sacsayhuamán ruins. These ruins are just outside the city. So, they are easy to reach as a solo female traveler.
A day trip to the Sacred Valley is another option for your solo trip to Cusco. Yes, there are ancient ruins there. But there are also indigenous markets, so you can do a little shopping while supporting the locals.
The Inca Temple of the Sun, or Qorikancha, should also be on your list of things to see during this solo adventure.
If you are wanting to experience solo female travel in Europe, consider visiting Florence, Italy. Florence is a historical destination that will have you experiencing the Renaissance.
One of the best things about this historical destination is it is small and walkable. So, you will have no difficulty at all getting from one historical site, or museum, to another.
Start with a climb to the top of the Duomo to grab photos of the panoramic views of Florence. Another photo worthy destination is the Ponte Vecchio. Although, you should also shop for jewelry at the shops that line this historic bridge.
You cannot spend time in Florence without stopping to see Michelangelo’s David at the Galleria dell ’Accademia.
A quick trip to Siena is also possible during your solo female vacation. Siena is a historic town nearby that will offer you a unique perspective into the history of the area.
Planning solo female travel in Asia? Kyoto, Japan is one of the best historical destinations for solo women travelers in Asia.
This historical city is full of temples, shrines, and traditional tea houses. Add in the spectacular natural beauty and you will discover a calm ambiance throughout your vacation.
Thousands of red torii gates can be seen at the Fushimi Inari Shrine. Although, you may be more interested in the stunning golden exteriors of Kinkaku-ji. It is a Zen Buddhist temple that will take your breath away.
One of the best spots to immerse yourself in traditional Japanese culture is the Gion District. It is completely possible to spot a geisha during your visit there.
Prague is a historical destination many solo women travelers forget about when planning vacations. However, this medieval city offers a laidback vibe complete with history and culture.
Start with a stroll across the Charles Bridge. This 14th century bridge is lined with statues. It is perfect for taking selfies to share on social media.
You won’t want to miss exploring the largest ancient castle in the world. Prague Castle dates back to the 9th and 10th centuries. Wander into Vladislav Hall to see the spectacular views of the city.
Other must-see sights at Prague Castle include:
Over in the Old Town Square, you must check out the infamous Astronomical Clock. And historic synagogues and the Old Jewish Cemetery are within the Jewish Quarter.
Exploring Edinburgh on foot is simple as a solo female traveler. Especially if you want to experience every inch of the medieval Old Town and Georgian New Town. Imagine ending each day in a cozy pub, as you dine on local cuisine and enjoy a pint or two.
Of course, you will also want to walk the Royal Mile while on a solo vacation in Edinburgh. This mile-long walk will take you from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Palace.
It will take you a little bit of time to walk along this road though. You will be quite curious and will want to stop in all the charming shops. Add in the historical landmarks and this mile-long walk could take you a few hours!
One of the unique things to do in this historical destination is hiking up Arthur’s Seat. This ancient volcano offers panoramic views from the top. So, you won’t want to miss this experience or the pictures you will end up taking to remember this magical moment.
Maritime history is everywhere in Lisbon. However, this is also an amazing destination for exploring medieval, Baroque, and Gothic architecture.
The neighborhoods in Lisbon are quite safe. And you will find yourself being welcomed by the locals everywhere you go.
To learn more about where everything is located in Lisbon, hop on the historic Tram 28. This tram will take you through the winding ancient streets within the city.
After your ride, you can explore the Jerónimos Monastery or the Belém Tower. Each one is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and they are packed with history.
Listen to fado music while wandering through the Alfama District. It is the oldest neighborhood in Lisbon. The streets are narrow. But the numerous viewpoints offer gorgeous sights.
These are some of the best historical destinations for solo women travelers. There are a few others you could also consider for your next history-packed solo vacation.
