As you are considering a family vacation in New Zealand, and maybe Australia, you may be wondering how you will get around. Well, there are plenty of ways to travel in New Zealand. Some are better than others. Today, I am going to share the best ways to travel in New Zealand with your family. I understand not everyone wants to experience this country in the same way. So, I recommend simply choosing the option that will work best for your needs when you are on a family vacation in New Zealand.
Okay, so we both know that your family will need to take a plane to reach New Zealand. However, planes can be an option depending on where you are traveling in this country. If you decide you want to visit both the North and South Islands, a plane is your best option.
I also recommend flying when you are traveling long distances in this country. It really beats sitting in a car for hours at a time.
One of the best ways to travel in New Zealand is by rental car. Having access to a car will allow you to go wherever you want at any time. You can use the car for day trips. Or you can use it to travel from one destination to the next. No matter what is on your list of best things to do in New Zealand, you can check it off when you have a rental car.
Since you will have this car for the entire trip, you won’t need to unload it every single day. You can leave items you may need each day during your outings in the car instead of taking it all into your accommodation every night. The best part is you won’t forget those items every morning when you head out for the day.
The bus in New Zealand is a national coach service called InterCity. This is the best public transportation option to get to and from attractions. You can also use the bus to go from one city to the next. The best part is you won’t need to do the driving. So, you can enjoy the scenery so much more.
The downside to using the bus is you won’t have as much flexibility. Taking luggage on the bus can be a pain too.
A guided bus tour may be the option that suits your family. You get to see specific destinations that are pre-arranged. A driver will take you to them all, as a tour guide shares information about everything you are seeing. You won’t need to do any driving and deal with the stress of that.
The only downside to taking a guided bus tour is you don’t get to plan the schedule. You can only spend a certain amount of time in each place. You can’t stay longer if you are having an amazing time. And you can’t leave early if you are bored out of your mind.
The train routes in New Zealand are limited. So, it is not the best way to travel in the country. However, it is an option for certain travel plans. I usually will recommend the train if you want an easy way to get between Christchurch and Greymouth. Another fun train ride goes between Wellington and Auckland.
So, if you are traveling between those areas, want to check out the scenery, and have the ability to stretch your legs, the train is the way to go.
These are the best ways to travel in New Zealand during a family vacation. I can help you determine which options are best for your family’s needs when you are traveling in this country. I can even include your travel options when I am personalizing your family vacation itinerary.
