Cultural heritage is vast in Asia. And yet those cultures, as well as the corresponding religions, are drastically different in each country. If you have been longing to immerse yourself in some of this culture, and take your family along for the ride, there is so much waiting for you. I recommend starting with a visit to some of the temples in Asia. There are plenty of temples to choose from. Each one will give you a glimpse into the lives of the locals. Today, I am going to share some of the best temples in Asia with you. Hopefully one of these temples in Asia will pique your interest as you are planning your next family vacation.

Jokhang Temple in Lhasa, Tibet 

You will find the Jokhang Temple high on a plateau right in the heart of the capital of Tibet. This temple is the main center of spirituality in this city. Plus, it is the most sacred spot in all of Tibet. There was a fire inside this temple a few years ago. However, repairs have been made to ensure it stays preserved for centuries to come.  

Hanging Temple in Shanxi, China 

Your family will be climbing a lot of stairs to reach this temple located seventy-five meters up the side of a cliff. This temple may be in a unique spot. However, that isn’t the only unique thing about it. The Hanging Temple is also one of the very few temples that combines prayer and practices from Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism.  

Daigo-ji in Kyoto, Japan 

Kyoto is known for its imperial palaces, religious sites, and gorgeous, lush gardens. There are quite a few temples in Kyoto to visit. However, if you are searching for the best, I recommend Daigo-ji. A charming bridge allows you to cross a tranquil stream to the hidden pagoda. This Buddhist temple has been here since 1115 and it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.  

The best time to visit this temple in Asia is during cherry blossom season. Although, it’s breathtaking in the fall when the leaves turn deep red too.  

Wat Rong Khun in Chiang Rai, Thailand 

One of the most famous temples in Asia is Wat Rong Khun. This temple is now a center for Buddhist learning and meditation. Wat Rong Khun is the most popular tourist attraction in Thailand. A visit here will show your family why, while also allowing you to experience the tranquility if you stay far enough away from the crowds.  

Taung Kalat Monastery in Mount Popa, Myanmar 

This monastery can be found on the side of the volcano known as Mount Popa. It sits more than fifteen hundred feet above the shoreline. Your family will need to climb up seven hundred steps to reach the Taung Kalat Monastery. However, the statues and views make the climb worthwhile.  

Oh, a word of advice… Watch out for the macaque monkeys that live near the monastery. Those monkeys will steal anything they can get their paws on.  

Angkor Wat in Siem Riep, Cambodia 

Angkor Wat is on the list of the Seven Wonders of the World, as well as an UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you are going to only choose one of the temples in Asia to visit, this one should be it. There are many reasons for this. The first one is that it is the largest religious structure in the world. Second, it has a mix of Buddhist and Hindu roots.  

I could go on and on with the reasons. But you should probably just visit to experience them all firsthand!
