An island vacation is on practically everyone’s travel bucket list. There are numerous islands throughout the world that you can visit during your next family vacation. However, not many of them offer the spectacular options and beauty you will discover on the islands in Fiji. The three hundred plus islands offer a wealth of adventures your family will love, as well as the downtime you deserve. While you can stick to the larger cities in Fiji, I recommend venturing out to some of the Fiji villages and towns. Each village and town offers something unique. And yet, each one will be more fascinating than the last.
Over in the island group of Viti Levu, you will find the Fiji village of Navala. Upon arriving in this village, one of the first things your family will notice is that it is in a picture-perfect location. The mountains in the distance are lush and create the perfect backdrop for pictures.
This is the very last village that has traditional thatched bungalows. It is best to visit this village during a day trip. I can arrange a guided tour for your family, or you can head out on your own using a 4WD vehicle.
When you choose any of the best Fiji villages to visit, you must remember to take a gift, sevusevu, with you to give to the chief.
Port Denarau is a town within the island group of Viti Levu. While the entire island is covered with lavish resorts and high-end homes, you can still find culture and traditions within this town. The town can be found directly on the harbor. It is quite touristy, but you can still learn plenty from the locals that live there.
The last of the best Fiji villages or towns to visit in the island group of Viti Levu is Sigatoka. This area has a small-town vibe, which your family will appreciate. Your days in Sigatoka can be filled with duty-free shopping adventures and eating at some of the best Indo-Fijian restaurants on all the islands.
If your family is looking for an off the beaten path destination during your island vacation, yet still wants plenty of action, Sigatoka is the perfect option.
Over in the island group of Lomaiviti Islands is the Fiji town of Levuka. This entire town is filled with charming boutiques, historic churches, and a museum. When your family is not exploring those, you may find yourselves reconnecting during a kayaking adventure.
While there are plenty of options for a family vacation in Levuka, I recommend you take the time to hike through the lush volcanic areas. The coral reefs out in the water are also excellent for when you need some time off land.
The last of the best Fiji villages and towns to visit is Savusavu. This area is on the island of Vauna Levu, which is part of the island group of the same name. This towns offers amazing dining options. But your family will prefer the hiking adventures you can have through the rainforests, as you search for the best waterfalls on the island.
And if you can manage to get a little “me time” during your island vacation, I recommend heading out to the nearby hot springs for a little dip.
The Fiji Culture Village is not a real Fiji village. However, this cultural center, located on the island of Viti Levu, will allow you to experience a replica of a real village. During your visit, everyone will have the opportunity to take a guided tour. Throughout the tour, your family will see traditional Fijian huts.
There are multiple demonstrations held within the Fiji Culture Village. A few of them include pottery, weaving, and fire making. Your favorite part of the experience though will be watching your food being prepared. The food is placed on hot stones and then covered with leaves and cloth to cook in the ground. Of course, the culture show and fire dancers may pique your interest more than the food being placed in the underground oven.
I also recommend you participate in the Kava ceremony before you leave this replica Fiji village. During the ceremony, a traditional drink is made from the powder of a plant root. The powder is mixed with water. It’s not the best tasting drink, but it’s not the worst either! So, make sure you at least take a sip to say you have experienced it for yourself!
These are the best Fiji villages and towns to visit during your next island vacation. As you can see, each village and town offers something unique for your family. While it is best to see as many of these Fiji villages and towns as you can, it is possible to get quite a bit of local experiences from visiting only one.
