Have you always wanted to escape the 48 continental states and explore one of the states not connected to the mainland? Well, Alaska is a wonderful option for families like yours! There is so much to see and do during a vacation in Alaska. Plus, you can choose to explore Alaska by different modes of transportation. My favorite way to see Alaska is by boat. But in the itinerary I’m sharing today, you will travel around Alaska via car. Well, that is after you get there by plane! Oh, and while this itinerary is packed with fun family friendly activities, they don’t need to be on your family’s itinerary. I can easily personalize an itinerary for your family, so you do everything you want while on vacation in Alaska.
Day one of your family vacation in Alaska will have you landing in Anchorage. Depending on the time you arrive, you may only have time to wander around the streets near your hotel. However, if you arrive early enough, you may be able to hike part of the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail or wander through Chugach State Park.
You will have more time to explore Anchorage as a family today. I recommend checking out the Alaska Native Heritage Center in the morning.
In the afternoon, it will be time to head to Palmer for an Alaskan Reindeer Farm experience. You will see plenty of reindeer, moose, bison, and alpacas during your visit. Your family’s favorite part though will be entering a pen with one of the reindeer to feed and pet them. Oh, I forgot…You will also be able to get kisses from Rocky and Lucy. These moose love to give kisses!
Grab those photos! You are going to want to frame these pictures when you get home! Maybe even use them for next year’s holiday cards.
Day three of your family vacation in Alaska will have you driving to Seward. Along the way, you will see the Kenai Peninsula. Stop at the Kenai River to see if any bears are on the shore trying to catch salmon.
Another stop you will want to make is in Girdwood. This small town has a tram you can ride to see the sights. A visit to the local brewery will have you enjoying a pint or two. Or you can go for a dog sled ride on a glacier during your visit. I always choose the latter. I can’t seem to resist the sled dog puppies!
A day out on a boat may be exactly what your family needs at this point of your vacation in Alaska. This is an Alaskan fishing adventure through Kenai Fjords National Park. This is a full-day trip. So, be prepared to be out on the water for at least eight hours.
Your family will be more than happy to sleep in after an entire day out on the water fishing. So let them and enjoy a little extra slumber yourself. Once you are all awake and have had a good breakfast, you can begin the drive to Talkeetna.
You may be ready to relax today, but I recommend taking one of the flightseeing trips offered here in Talkeetna. These flightseeing adventures are the perfect way to see Denali from a different perspective.
When you are not up in the air, wander around this charming town. It is said that this area was used as inspiration for the television series, Northern Exposure.
This entire day will be spent seeing the best Denali National Park has to offer. You will board a tour bus for this family adventure. Your driver will take you through sixty plus miles of this park. Along the way, you will see all types of native wildlife.
Hopefully it will be a clear day when you visit. If it is, you will stop at the Stony Hill Overlook to see Denali from the base all the way to the summit.
Day eight is your last full day of vacation in Alaska. This means you will need to drive back to Anchorage from Denali. I recommend getting an early start, so you have more time to check out the remaining few attractions your family missed in Anchorage.
Then after a good night’s sleep, you will all be more than ready to board the plane back home in the morning.
There are so many other things your family can do while on vacation in Alaska. We will discuss many of them, as I am personalizing your family’s itinerary for your Alaskan vacation.
