At the southern end of western Colorado, you will discover a mountain range called the San Juan Mountains. Chimney Rock National Monument is an archaeological site that is located near those mountains. A visit to this area will have you walking along the same paths that the locals walked over more than one thousand years ago.
There are so many different attractions to see when you are exploring the Chimney Rock National Monument. However, here are my favorites, and I know you will love them too!
This scenic railroad offers tours along the same railways that have transported people since 1880. Your journey will take you over sixty-four miles of land that goes between the borders of Colorado and New Mexico. One moment you might be seeing the steep mountain canyons, while the next, you may be in front of lush meadows or the high desert.
This is another railroad you can ride during your visit. However, I recommend spending most of your time exploring the railroad museum and taking one of the many yard tours. This will allow you to see how these railroads have been working since the very beginning and how things have changed over the years.
Salmon Ruins is an archaeological site that you can actually explore during your visit. As you are walking around, you will see some of the artifacts on display, as well as a New Mexico frontier homestead. You will learn quite a bit about the archaeology process and what is being done to preserve all these items.
If you plan your road trip to the Chimney Rock National Monument right, you can go skiing at the Wolf Creek Ski Area. The slopes are perfect for all your skiing needs, so make sure this is towards the top of your list when you are in this part of the country during the winter months.
There are many different breweries near the Chimney Rock National Monument. Therefore, once you are done seeing the sights, you can easily sit back with a cold beer and reflect on your day. A couple of the more popular breweries include Pagosa Brewing & Grill, Wolfe Brewing Company, and Riff Raff Brewing Company.
These are some of the things you can see and do when you are exploring the Chimney Rock National Monument. I can help you determine which ones your family will love and even add a few others to your list.
