Are you ready to start exploring the country once again this summer by taking a family vacation? Well, National Oklahoma Day has arrived, and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate than to plan a family vacation. There are so many family activities to choose from when on vacation in Oklahoma. I have discovered some family favorites. Of course, this list will only get you started. We can easily add other options when I am planning your vacation.
I can’t think of a family activity that is more thrilling than a water park. When you decide to take a family vacation in Oklahoma, you will have the opportunity to spend a little time at Water Zoo. This indoor waterpark contains 28,000 square feet of water fun.
Older kids will love the Tornado Bowl. Younger kids will prefer getting soaked by the dumping buckets at the water playground. And you will love relaxing as you go around the lazy river nonstop.
If waterslides are not your thing, or you want to spend the day outdoors, you can always head over to Frontier City Theme Park. There are 40 rides and attractions. The carousel and Ferris wheel are perfect for everyone in your family. Only the thrill seekers in your family will enjoy the adrenaline filled roller coasters.
Animal lovers will want to spend an entire day at the Oklahoma City Zoo. There are 2,000 animals there to visit. A couple of the most popular areas to make memories with your family include the elephant habitat, Cat Forest, and Great EscAPE. Oh, and don’t forget to make time for the aquatics shows!
With more than 12,000 acres to explore in Lake Murray State Park, it is easy to see how you could be active throughout your visit on your vacation in Oklahoma. You can simply walk around while you are there. However, I recommend going for a bike ride or a boat ride. You can even play a round of golf on the golf course.
My favorite thing about this state park though is all the water sports. Your kids will never be bored when they spend all day in the water.
If your family never tires of animals, the Oklahoma Aquarium must be on your list of things to do on vacation in Oklahoma. The exhibits are incredible. But your kids will prefer feeding the alligators and otters before touching the stingrays. I recommend checking the feeding schedule when you arrive, so you don’t miss out on any of the action.
Not all kids love dark creepy spaces. But if yours do, you should have me plan a little time at Alabaster Caverns State Park. This is where you will find the only gypsum cave open to the public in the country. Once you have explored this cave, you can send the kids on a spelunking journey in one of the other nearby caves. Feel free to join them to add to their enjoyment!
Your kids may not want to learn about history while on a family vacation in Oklahoma. However, they won’t realize they are when you visit the Cherokee Strip Museum. Time spent at this museum will have you experiencing what a normal day was like for the Cherokee people. The exhibits include a dressmaker’s shop, one-room schoolhouse, farmhouse porch, and a chicken coop area. Your kids will be amazed when they see what the toys looked like back then!
If your kids love family activities like these, you may want to consider adding the Har-Ber Village Pioneer Museum to your list as well.
There are more than 100 hands-on family activities inside Leonardo’s Discovery Warehouse. Artists will love the Giant Lite-Brite. Budding scientists will prefer climbing the Power Tower and exploring the outdoor playground.
This interactive museum has been in the same location since 1967. Your family can learn what it takes to become a firefighter during your vacation in Oklahoma. Of course, the museum is filled with many artifacts, so there will be a history lesson too. Just make sure you take the time to look at as many of the fire department patches from around the world as you can. It is the largest collection you will ever see.
If you don’t have a potential firefighter on your hands, you may have a train lover. The Oklahoma Railway Museum is perfect for anyone who loves trains. There are plenty of locomotives, cars, and even a steam engine to look at during your visit.
I recommend having me check into whether your family vacation coincides with the monthly 40-minute vintage diesel locomotive train ride. It is a family activity you won’t want to miss!
These are some of the fun family activities to do on vacation in Oklahoma for National Oklahoma Day. I can help you find other family activities for your vacation when I plan your trip.
