If you ask me, haunted hotels around the world are some of the most extraordinary places a family can stay. And it is never too early to start planning a trip to one. Whether you are dreaming of a spine-tingling Halloween getaway or simply craving an adventure that is a little out of the ordinary, these legendary properties offer so much more than a bed for the night. They offer stories. History. Mystery. And the kind of unforgettable shared experiences that families talk about for decades.
Now, I want to be clear about something. You absolutely do not have to wait until Halloween to visit one of these hauntingly beautiful destinations. The paranormal does not take a seasonal break. And frankly, neither do the best family travel opportunities. From grand historic hotels steeped in Civil War lore to gothic castles in the Scottish Highlands, the most haunted hotels in the world are waiting for your family year-round. And I am here to help you plan every last detail.
I have been planning multigenerational family vacations and luxury travel experiences since opening Elite Travel Journeys in 2014. I can tell you with confidence: A paranormal travel experience is unlike anything else. It is immersive. It is thrilling. And it connects families, grandparents, parents, teens, and everyone in between, in a way that a standard beach vacation simply cannot. There is nothing quite like whispering ghost stories in a centuries-old hallway with the people you love most.

Let’s be honest… Planning a family vacation where everyone is genuinely excited is no small feat. Teenagers are notoriously hard to impress. Grandparents want comfort and history. And you? You want to make memories that actually stick. That is exactly why haunted hotels around the world have become one of the fastest-growing segments in family travel.
These properties are not just spooky for the sake of being spooky. They are layered with authentic history, stunning architecture, world-class hospitality, and stories that captivate every generation. Many offer ghost tours, paranormal investigations, and historic programming that turn a regular stay into a fully immersive experience. And because these are typically grand, historic properties, the accommodations are often exceptional. This matters deeply to all my clients.
So, whether your family is made up of true believers in the paranormal or enthusiastic skeptics who simply love a great story, these are the kinds of trips that bring everyone to the same table. All with no distractions, no screens, and nothing but genuine connection.
Absolutely not. And in fact, the earlier you plan, the better. The most iconic and sought-after haunted hotels around the world book up quickly, especially around Halloween. If a Halloween stay is on your family’s bucket list, I strongly recommend reaching out to me at least six to twelve months in advance. October availability at legendary properties disappears fast.
That said, do not let the calendar stop you. These destinations are magnificent in every season. A winter stay at a haunted Scottish castle feels like stepping into a gothic novel. A spring visit to a centuries-old hotel in New Orleans wraps you in warm Southern air and even warmer ghost stories. Fall foliage and haunted history in New England? Practically cinematic. There is no wrong time to book one of these extraordinary family travel experiences.
Let’s start close to home. The United States is overflowing with historic haunted hotels, and many of them are perfectly suited for family travel. Here are some of my favorites:
If there is one haunted hotel in America that has transcended into genuine cultural legend, it is the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado. Nestled in the Rocky Mountains near Rocky Mountain National Park, this stunning property was the very inspiration that Stephen King used when writing The Shining. One of the most celebrated and terrifying novels ever written. The setting alone is breathtaking, and the hotel’s paranormal activity is well-documented and frequently reported by guests.
For families, I wholeheartedly recommend the Historic Stanley Night Tour, which is equal parts educational and thrilling. The Stanley is also a magnificent base camp for exploring Rocky Mountain National Park. This makes this the ideal combination of nature adventure and paranormal travel experience in one trip. This is one of the most family-friendly haunted hotels you will find anywhere in the world.

Savannah, Georgia is widely considered one of the most haunted cities in America. And The Marshall House sits right at the heart of its ghostly reputation. Once a Civil War hospital and the site of two devastating yellow fever outbreaks, the property carries the weight of that history in every candlelit corridor. Guests frequently report the sound of children laughing in the halls late at night. And more than a few have been startled by bathroom faucets turning on without explanation.
What makes The Marshall House so special for families is Savannah itself. Between the cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages, and historic squares draped in Spanish moss, this city is one of the most atmospheric and walkable destinations in the American South. Ghost tours depart nightly throughout the city, and many are family-friendly. Pair that with world-class Southern cuisine and the charm of the Savannah Historic District, and you have an extraordinary multigenerational vacation destination.

Washington, D.C. is one of my absolute favorite family vacation destinations, and the Hay-Adams adds an extraordinary layer of intrigue to any visit. The ghost of Marian Hooper Adams, the wife of one of the original property owners, is said to wander the halls. Guests have reported her presence through unexplained sobbing. Seen doors opening and closing on their own. And radios switching on without anyone touching them. Legend has it that if you catch the scent of almonds in the air, something strange is about to unfold.<p>Beyond the ghost stories, D.C. is packed with world-class museums, monuments, and experiences that make this city endlessly rewarding for families of every age. The Smithsonian alone could keep your family occupied for days. Combine that with a stay at one of the most storied hotels in the capital, and you have a multigenerational trip that checks every box.
Chicago’s Congress Plaza Hotel has welcomed presidents, celebrities, and more than a few notorious figures over its long history. It seems that some of those guests never quite left. The ghosts of Al Capone and the legendary “Peg-Leg Johnny” are among the most frequently encountered spirits at this South Loop landmark. The most concentrated paranormal activity, according to guests and investigators alike, tends to center around room 411. If your family is serious about a genuine ghost encounter, that is the room to request.
For families who love Old Hollywood glamour as much as they love a good ghost story, The Hollywood Roosevelt is a dream destination. Marilyn Monroe was so devoted to this iconic property that she reportedly lived here for two years. Her spirit is said to still linger in the mirrors and hallways, alongside the ghost of Montgomery Clift. Walk near suite 928 and you might hear the faint, unmistakable sound of a trumpet. Even when the suite sits empty. The Hollywood Roosevelt sits in the heart of the Walk of Fame, making it the perfect base for exploring Los Angeles with family.
New Orleans is, without question, the ghost capital of the United States. The Bourbon Orleans Hotel is one of its most storied properties. Originally built as the Orleans Ballroom and Theater in the early 1800s, the building later served as a convent for nuns and a medical center during devastating yellow fever epidemics. The spiritual residue of all that history is palpable. Guests have reported encounters with a dancer, a Confederate soldier, wandering children, and nuns who still seem to be going about their duties in the afterlife.
New Orleans is one of the great culinary and cultural cities of the world, which makes it a spectacular destination for families who want adventure, history, and incredible food alongside their paranormal travel experience. The city’s jazz heritage, its architecture, and its world-famous culinary traditions are as much a draw as the ghosts.

Mackinac Island is one of those rare places that feels genuinely removed from the modern world. No cars, no rush, just carriages, bicycles, and the quiet expanse of Lake Huron. The Grand Hotel, perched above the island with its iconic 660-foot front porch, is one of America’s great historic properties. During construction, workers unearthed remains believed to belong to the Anishinaabe people who first called this island home. Their presence, along with the ghosts of local fishermen lost at sea, is said to linger throughout the hotel. Guests have reported seeing a mysterious black cloud and a figure in a top hat who appears at the piano before vanishing into thin air.
The Emily Morgan Hotel sits adjacent to the Alamo in the heart of San Antonio, and its haunted history is layered with the kind of detail that makes for extraordinary storytelling. The building once housed a medical center complete with a morgue and crematorium. Guests frequently report hearing hospital carts being pushed through the corridors late at night. Some have even caught a glimpse of a woman dressed in white pushing those carts when they looked into the hallway. Bathtubs mysteriously filling with blue water and phones ringing in the middle of the night with no caller on the line round out the list of reported phenomena.
If you are looking for one of the most genuinely eerie experiences in American haunted travel, 20 South Battery in Charleston delivers in spades. Formerly known as the Battery Carriage House, this property is consistently ranked among the most haunted buildings in one of America’s most haunted cities. Several ghosts from the Civil War era are said to roam the property. Including one particularly alarming apparition that guests have described as a headless torso. Charleston itself is a magnificent destination for families, with extraordinary history, gorgeous architecture, and cuisine that rivals any city in the South.
Check out these haunted southeastern towns in the US.
Few haunted destinations in America carry the name recognition of the Lizzie Borden house in Fall River, Massachusetts. Over a century ago, Lizzie Borden allegedly killed her father and stepmother in this very home. The case has never truly been solved. Today, the house operates as a bed and breakfast where guests are welcome to spend the night surrounded by the spirits that are said to still inhabit the property. This is best suited for older teens and adults who have a genuine love of true crime history and paranormal investigation.
The United States has no shortage of ghostly accommodations. But when you venture beyond its borders, the haunted hotels around the world reach an entirely different level of age, grandeur, and mystery. Europe in particular is home to properties that have stood for centuries, carrying centuries’ worth of stories.
Here are some of the most extraordinary international haunted hotel destinations I recommend for adventurous families:
Rising from the Canadian Rockies like a castle from a fairy tale, the Fairmont Banff Springs is one of the most visually spectacular hotels in the world. And one of the most haunted. Known locally as the “Castle in the Rockies,” this magnificent property has been welcoming guests since 1888. The most famous ghost is a bride who is said to have slipped on the marble staircase on her wedding day, her spirit still dancing in the ballroom and roaming the hallways in her gown. For families who want world-class skiing, hiking, and wildlife viewing alongside their paranormal travel experience, Banff is an unbeatable destination.
Québec City is one of North America’s most enchanting destinations, and Le Château Frontenac is its crown jewel. This iconic castle-hotel, perched above the St. Lawrence River, is one of the most photographed buildings in Canada. It also carries a rich paranormal history, with guests reporting mysterious sounds, unexplained cold spots, and apparitions that seem to belong to the city’s deeply layered French colonial past. Old Québec itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and exploring it with family, through cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages, and centuries-old fortifications, is an experience I recommend to every family I work with.
Scotland is, without question, one of the premier haunted travel destinations on earth. The country’s ancient castles, misty highlands, and turbulent history create a paranormal atmosphere that is genuinely unparalleled. Several Scottish castles have been converted into extraordinary luxury hotels. This allows families to sleep within centuries-old stone walls surrounded by documented ghostly history.
Many of Scotland’s castle hotels offer dedicated ghost tours, highland history programming, and outdoor adventures including hiking, falconry, and whisky tours for the adults.
For multigenerational families, Scotland is one of those rare destinations that manages to captivate and excite every age group simultaneously. I have helped many of my clients plan extraordinary Scottish castle stays, and without exception, it becomes one of the most beloved trips their families have ever taken.

Ireland is another destination that sits near the top of my list for families seeking haunted hotels around the world. The Emerald Isle is home to an astonishing number of castle hotels, many of which have been standing since the medieval era and carry ghost stories that stretch back just as far. The Irish take tremendous pride in their folklore and paranormal heritage. Many properties lean into that tradition beautifully, offering storytelling evenings, ghost walks, and heritage tours that bring the history alive for guests of every age.
Beyond the ghost stories, Ireland offers stunning natural landscapes, extraordinary hospitality, and a warmth that makes families feel immediately at home. Pair a haunted castle stay with the Cliffs of Moher, the Ring of Kerry, or the Wild Atlantic Way, and you have the ingredients for a truly magnificent family vacation.
England is home to some of the most famous haunted hotels in the world. Many of which are set in manor houses, former abbeys, and ancient inns with histories stretching back hundreds of years. From the Lake District to the Cotswolds to the streets of York, widely considered the most haunted city in Europe, England offers an extraordinary range of spooky family-friendly haunted hotels that combine luxury, history, and genuine paranormal intrigue.
For families with a love of literature, many of England’s most haunted regions overlap with the settings of beloved gothic novels and classic horror stories. There is something deeply thrilling about standing in a place that inspired the dark imagination of the Bronte sisters or Bram Stoker.
Japan’s relationship with the spirit world is ancient, complex, and deeply woven into its cultural identity. The country’s tradition of ghost storytelling, known as Kaidan, stretches back centuries. Many of Japan’s historic ryokans (traditional inns) and hotels carry their own ghostly legends. Staying at one of these properties is not simply a paranormal travel experience. It is a window into one of the world’s oldest and most fascinating spiritual traditions.
Japan is also one of the most family-friendly destinations on earth, with extraordinary cuisine, seamless transportation, and a culture of hospitality that is second to none. For families who want to combine the thrill of haunted travel with one of the most awe-inspiring cultural experiences available anywhere in the world, Japan belongs at the very top of your list. I would love to help you plan an itinerary that weaves together historic temples, bullet trains, and the kind of haunted inn experiences that you simply cannot find anywhere else.
Over the years, I have heard many of the same questions from families who are curious about haunted hotel vacations but are not quite sure what to expect.
Let me answer a few of the most common ones here:
In the vast majority of cases, absolutely yes. Most haunted hotels around the world are distinguished historic properties with exceptional safety standards and professional hospitality teams. The “haunted” aspect refers to reported paranormal phenomena, unexplained sounds, sightings, cold spots, not to any physical danger. That said, I always recommend reviewing the specific property and its ghost tour content with your family beforehand, particularly if you have younger or more sensitive children. Some content and imagery may be better suited for older kids and teens.
While Halloween is undeniably the most atmospheric time to visit, the best haunted hotels around the world are spectacular year-round. If you have flexibility, consider shoulder seasons like September or early November. The spooky ambiance is fully intact, availability is better, and the crowds are smaller. For international destinations like Scotland or Ireland, the misty autumn and winter months create an atmosphere that is genuinely cinematic.
Many do, and for families, these tours are often the highlight of the entire stay. From the Historic Stanley Night Tour in Colorado to dedicated paranormal investigations at castle hotels in Scotland and Ireland, there are rich, structured experiences available that bring the ghost stories to life in a safe, guided, and deeply engaging way. I always look for properties that offer these kinds of immersive experiences for the families I work with, because they transform a stay from simply interesting to truly unforgettable.
Everything. When you stay at one of the great haunted hotels around the world, you are not just sleeping in a nice room and checking off tourist attractions. You are stepping into living history. You are sharing stories around a fireplace in a room that has stood for centuries. And you are walking hallways where remarkable, tragic, and extraordinary human stories unfolded. That kind of context changes everything about a trip. It creates the conditions for genuine wonder. For conversation that goes beyond the surface. And for the kind of shared memory that becomes part of your family’s story.
Planning a haunted hotel vacation, especially an international one, is a different kind of undertaking than booking a typical resort trip. These properties have specific histories, specific ghost tour schedules, and specific booking windows that require advance attention.
Here is how I approach it for my clients:
Start with your family’s interests and comfort level. Some families want the most historically significant haunted hotel they can find, regardless of scare factor. Others want a balance of history and luxury with just a touch of the paranormal. Knowing where your family falls on that spectrum helps me narrow down the perfect property.
Consider the full destination. The best haunted hotel trips are built around a destination, not just a property. The hotel is the anchor but the city, region, or country surrounding it should be just as compelling. Savannah, New Orleans, Québec City, Edinburgh, Dublin, every one of these destinations is worth exploring deeply beyond the hotel doors.
Book early. Especially for October. I cannot stress this enough. The most iconic haunted hotels around the world fill up months in advance for Halloween season. If a spooky October stay is your dream, start the conversation with me now, regardless of what month it is when you are reading this.
Let me handle the details. My job is to take the logistics completely off your plate so that when you arrive, all you have to do is walk through those historic doors and let the adventure begin. From private ghost tours to curated dining experiences to multigenerational room configurations, I make sure every detail is perfect.
