Does your family want to visit the Hawaiian Islands during a future vacation? Have you basically decided the Big Island of Hawaii has everything you need for a fabulous family vacation? Well, I can tell you that you have made a fantastic decision! There are so many thrilling activities, as well as options for relaxing, available during family vacations in Hawaii. However, when you decide to start planning this vacation, you will want to consider going off the beaten path. I always recommend visiting some of the hidden gems of an area when you are traveling and making memories with family. Over in Akaka Falls State Park, there are quite a few hidden gems many people are not aware of. Some of those hidden gems are in the park, while others are close by. Today, I am going to share the hidden gems inside and near Akaka Falls State Park with you so you can add them to your itinerary on your next Hawaiian family vacation.
Okay, so the Pepeekeo Scenic Drive isn’t right within Akaka Falls State Park. However, it is about fifteen minutes away. This drive begins in Pepeekeo town and goes along the eastern coast of the island. There are plenty of lookout points along the way.
I recommend stopping at as many of them as possible. Each one offers spectacular views of the ocean and the smaller communities.
Akaka Falls is the main feature of this state park in Hawaii. However, a little way upstream, you will find the Kahuna Falls Overlook. Your family can easily hike the half mile to reach this area within Akaka Falls State Park.
Most people are aware of the paved hiking trail that leads to Akaka Falls in this state park. There are many other hiking trails within this park, though. If your family loves to hike, I recommend venturing out on one of those trails.
Some of the trails can be slightly challenging, so be prepared when you head out.
If you do take the time to drive the Pepeekeo Scenic Drive and make a few stops, you will have a chance to see Pe’epe’e Falls. This waterfall is only eighty feet tall. But the water drops down into a very deep pool that is surrounded by lots of lush vegetation.
You must hike about a half mile to reach this trail. Make sure you are all wearing your bathing suits because you can all swim in the deep pool when you arrive!

After a day exploring Akaka Falls State Park, your family will be ready for a little time at the beach. Thankfully, Honoli’i Beach Park is only about fourteen miles away. Your family will love swimming or relaxing on the sand.
This is also a popular beach for surfing and bodyboarding. So, feel free to grab your boards and hit the waves during your family vacation in Hawaii.
Kolekole Beach Park is another option. However, it is twenty-five miles from Akaka Falls. However, it is worth a visit if you want to capture pictures of the massive cliffs surrounding the beach. This is also a perfect beach for picnics and relaxation.
One of the largest sets of lava tubes in the world can be found on the Big Island of Hawaii. These lava tubes are known as Kaumana Caves. Your family can explore these caves on their own. However, I recommend taking a guided tour so you learn more about everything you see.
These are the hidden gems you can see both inside and near Akaka Falls State Park. I can add these destinations to your itinerary, as well as many others, as I am planning your Hawaiian family vacation.
