The Hawaiian Islands are known for their soft, sugary beaches and magnificent waterfalls. The laidback vibe of the locals and the numerous luaus are two other things that many travelers like yourself have in mind when they decide to take a family vacation to any of the Hawaiian Islands. However, did you know that all the Hawaiian Islands have incredible hiking trails? You can easily go for a hike during your family vacation! On the island of Lanai, you will not find as many hiking trails as you will on some of the other islands. But you will find a few that will lead you to spectacular views that include many of the other Hawaiian Islands!
The Pu’upehe Trail will take your family directly to Sweetheart Rock. This trail begins near the Four Seasons Resort, which is over in Manele Bay. The Pu’upehe Trail is quite easy at less than a mile. While you can hike this trail at any time of the day, I recommend doing it early in the morning. At that time of day, you get so much more than views of Sweetheart Rock. The spinner dolphins arrive in this area of the water early in the morning. You can watch them play and jump out of the water, so make sure you have your camera with you when you arrive!
The Munro Hiking Trail is one of the best options on the island of Lanai if you want to wander through forests and see wildlife. It is a twelve-mile hiking trail that is moderately difficult. The trail itself is rough and there are often four-wheel drive vehicles zooming along it. Therefore, you must be careful if you decide to hike this trail because you never know when a vehicle will come up behind you or in front of you. I happen to love this hiking trail in Lanai because, on a clear day, you can see six Hawaiian Islands!
This hiking trail in Lanai will take you from Lanai City all the way out to Polihua Beach. The Polihua Trail is nine and a half miles long. This is another trail that many people will choose to drive on, so do not feel as if you must walk it instead! On your way to Polihua Beach, you will pass by the barren Garden of the Gods. While there is nothing lush and green in sight, you will at least enjoy the stunning views of Molokai in the distance. I recommend spending a little time at Polihua Beach when you arrive because it is a little piece of paradise you can make a few memories to remember forever.
The Kaunolu Trail is a historic hiking trail on the southern end of Lanai. This trail is approximately three miles round trip. While most of the hike is fairly simple, there are no trees for shade. And the hike back is uphill, which will add a level of difficulty for some people. There are multiple historic places to see along the way, so it is best to plan an entire day for this adventure. One of the first things you will discover is the stone foundations of the old fishing village of Kaunolu. Kehekili’s Leap will be the next item on your list of things to see during this hike in Lanai.
Don’t worry if this hike does not sound like something your family will be thrilled with. If you think the hike will be too much for anyone in your family, you can always drive down to Kaunolu Village!
The hiking trail in Lanai that will always have the most people on it is the Koloiki Hiking Trail. This trail is just over four miles long and is moderately challenging. The Koloiki Trail also starts near the Four Seasons Resort. If you are unsure about this trail, you can grab a map from the front desk of the resort. However, the hiking trail is very well-marked, so it would be almost impossible to get lost. This is one of the only places where you can walk through pine trees on this Hawaiian Island. So, make sure you add it to your list if you really want to see greenery as you are hiking with your family.
One of the favorite coastal trails on the island of Lanai is the Fisherman’s Trail. This trail begins at Hulopoe Beach. While this is a fabulous hiking trail in Lanai, it is not one your family will want to conquer after it has been raining a lot. The trail can get really muddy after heavy rains!
These are the best hikes in Lanai. Each one of these hiking trails offers something different when it comes to spectacular views and historic sights. If your family loves to hike, we can discuss which of these hikes will be perfect for your next family vacation in Lanai.
