Do you love visiting unique destinations with your family? Iceland is one of those countries that most people either forget about or skip. I’m not sure why, because it is a beautiful country filled with so many things to see and do. Today, I am sharing an incredible nine-day itinerary for a family vacation in Iceland. It is packed with family friendly activities. However, you won’t need to follow this exact itinerary if you choose to vacation in Iceland with your family. I can easily personalize your family’s itinerary, so you are all doing exactly what you want while visiting this magnificent country. Check out my travel guide to Iceland for even more information about traveling there.
Your first day in Iceland will be very low key. You will fly into Reykjavik. Once you have collected your luggage, you will be taken to your hotel to get settled in. Welcome drinks and snacks will be provided. Although, you can skip those and head out to explore the city and grab a bite to eat.
Today, your family will travel to Vik. Along the way, you will stop at the hot springs at Geysir, the Gullfoss waterfalls, and the Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls.
On day three of your incredible family vacation in Iceland, you will travel along the southern coast of the country to your destination of Höfn. You will stop to marvel at the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajökull. However, the highlight of this day is Lake Jökulsárlón. There are blue icebergs on the lake. You will want to capture a few pictures of them to remember this day by.
The adventures today include a drive past charming fishing villages, as well as Friar Island. Once you reach your destination, you will be taken to the only geothermal floating pools in Iceland. There you will be able to relax and unwind, while reliving your family vacation in Iceland to this point. Have a few laughs and enjoy the conversations you have within these geothermal pools.
You will be surprised to learn that there is a desert in Iceland. You will drive through the sand desert of Möðrudalur to see Dettifoss. This is the most powerful waterfall in all of Europe. Afterwards, you will drive to Lake Mývatn to see the geological formations. All the geothermal activity in this area creates mud pools filled with colorful deposits.
Once you arrive in Akureyri, you will have time to explore on your own. I recommend having me book a whale watching tour for your free time. But you can choose to wander around and enjoy the sights on land too.
You will see more of Akureyri on day six of your family vacation in Iceland. This capital city of Northern Iceland has been around since 1602. So, it is full of history. You will see plenty of mountains and waterfalls, as you continue on your way to Borgarnes.
Snæfellsjökull National Park is known as the Jewel of West Iceland. It is where the most famous volcano in the country is located. This volcano ensures you will see plenty of black lava fields during your visit.
Send the kids ahead during a walk along the sea cliffs of Arnastapi. This will give you a little alone time to walk hand in hand with your spouse.
Thingvellir is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Iceland. It is located at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, which is where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet.
Afterwards, head to the Blue Lagoon for one more soak in the hot springs before returning to Reykjavik for one final night.
On this beautiful morning, you will wake up and realize you are not ready for your vacation in Iceland to end. But the time has come, and hopefully you were able to make those memories that matter during this incredible family vacation.
There are so many other things your family can do during a vacation in Iceland. I can easily personalize your family’s itinerary, so you see exactly what you want while in this part of the world. All you need to do is let me know what your family is interested in when we start to talk about your next family vacation. I will do all the rest and make sure you have plenty of options to make memories with your kids.
