Gumbo is a soup that became popular down in the state of Louisiana. So popular that it is now considered the state dish. If you haven’t tried gumbo yet, you don’t know what you are missing. This flavorful soup/stew is quite tasty. There are many different gumbo recipes on the internet that you can try. You can even order gumbo at many restaurants, especially in the South. So, on National Gumbo Day, let’s celebrate by eating some gumbo and planning a family vacation in Louisiana.
As I mentioned above, there are quite a few gumbo recipes to choose from. However, it is helpful to know gumbo is made using the following main ingredients:
You can leave the thickener out when you make your own gumbo. However, be prepared for a thinner soup-like dish.
If you want to make your own gumbo to hold you over until you can take a family vacation in Louisiana, you can. I recommend trying the Good New Orleans Creole Gumbo.
When it is time to plan your next family vacation, you may want to choose the time of year when gumbo festivals are in full swing in Louisiana. Most of the gumbo festivals are held in Louisiana during the months of October and November. However, you may find a gumbo festival at another time of the year.
The Louisiana Gumbo Festival is held in Chackbay. That area has been designated as the Gumbo Capital of Louisiana. This gumbo festival is held over the course of a few days every October. More than 500 gallons of gumbo are prepared for this festival. Other Cajun dishes like jambalaya are also available. When you are not eating, you may find yourself dancing to live music.
The Tremé Gumbo Festival is one of the festivals that is held during the month of March. This is perfect if you cannot take a family vacation in the fall. This gumbo festival is held right outside the French Quarter. When you are not trying all the different types of gumbo, you may be exploring the Arts Market. Local musicians can also be heard throughout the area.
This gumbo festival is held every October in the Acadian Village in Lafayette. This is an excellent festival to attend because you can try many different foods and vote for your favorites. Cajun bands can be heard performing, along with many other live musicians.
Imagine watching more than 100 teams cook up their favorite gumbo recipes. It would be a tasty and aromatic experience, right?? Well, you can actually do this when you attend the World Championship Gumbo Cookoff every October. This gumbo festival is held in New Iberia. You must attend if you want the freshest and most delicious gumbo you have ever eaten!
The Bridge City Gumbo Festival is held every October in Bridge City. This is one of the biggest food events in New Orleans. The entire weekend is full of delicious gumbo, other yummy foods, and tons of fun. Some of the best chefs from New Orleans join in on the fun as they prepare their secret gumbo recipes.
Gumbo is such a delicious dish, no matter how it is prepared. On National Gumbo Day, I think we should all make our own gumbo at home. You can either use the recipe from above or find another incredible recipe to follow. Of course, you should also plan a family vacation in Louisiana, so you can try some of the best gumbo in the world.
