Did you know that bourbon was first made and served in Kentucky?? Distilleries in the state, and especially Louisville, have been crafting batches of this liquid since the 18th century. They have made a few small tweaks over the years, but the bourbon still tastes amazing! During a Louisville family vacation, you must visit some of the well-known bourbon and whiskey distilleries in Louisville.
Evan Williams Bourbon first opened on the shores of the Ohio River back in 1783. It is one of the best bourbon distilleries in Louisville. You can take a tour to see how this distillery makes its different types of bourbon. Afterward, you can taste many of the different bourbons to find your favorite. Then you can purchase a bottle to take home from your Louisville family vacation.
Michter’s is the distillery that was once known as Shenk’s and Bomberger’s. This well-known whiskey distillery in Louisville was founded back in 1753. It currently makes some of the best whiskey in the state. The distillery is located within the Shively area of Louisville, while the Fort Nelson Building is located on Louisville’s Museum Row. It is best to make reservations for a tour of this whiskey distillery, but you can get lucky on occasion if you just walk in. They do offer three different tour options, so you can easily choose the one that fits in your Louisville family vacation schedule the best.
The founder of the Old Forester Distilling Company was George Garvin Brown. He made the first bottle of Old Forester Whiskey in 1870. Tours of this Louisville distillery are also available. It is best to do the tours prior to having a tasting so you know how the whiskey is made.
While the tours of the distilleries in Louisville are wonderful, there are many other ways to taste whiskey and bourbon during your Louisville family getaway. The Urban Bourbon Trail is comprised of multiple bars and restaurants that serve bourbon and whiskey.
If you are doing a Kentucky road trip, you can even do the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. This trail takes you to many of the distilleries that are located throughout the state. One of the best bourbon-tasting options will be at Jim Beam. Let me know if you want me to add that destination to your itinerary.
