Practically everyone knows about the Gold Rush, so you shouldn’t be surprised at the amount of history there is when it comes to gold out west. However, if you truly want to search for gold, Summit County is the place to go. This area of Colorado has more than nine thousand mining claims. There are one hundred forty-eight active mines right now, and you can search for gold if you visit one.

Visit Country Boy Mine 

Country Boy Mine offers one of the major gold mine tours in the county. This mine was discovered back in 1877, and it is one of the most famous mines in the area. When you take this gold mine tour, you will go one thousand feet into the mine to see what the miners saw all those years ago. You may not spot gold down there, but you will learn how the miners spent their days.  

You can also pan for gold at Country Boy Mine. Your tour guide will take you down to Eureka Creek, where you will spend an hour panning for gold. Not everyone is lucky and discovers gold during their visit, but it is definitely a fun and exciting way to spend an afternoon with your family!  

The interactive museum at Country Boy Mine is one of the best ways to see what a town looked like during the gold rush. You can visit the doctor’s office, bank, and marshal’s office from the 1880s. This is also where you can see how dynamite is used to blow big holes into the mines.  

Take a Washington Gold Mine Tour 

The Washington Gold Mine used to be one of the biggest gold mines in the area. It has five main shafts, as well as ten thousand feet of underground mining space. Your guide will take you through the sections of the mine that are still open to visitors. Along the way, they will share the history that took place there. Before you leave, you must take the time to pan for gold. After all, you never know what you will find!  

Visit the Lomax Placer Mine 

The Lomax Placer Mine can be found right near downtown Breckenridge. This is one of the surface mines in the area, so your tour will include seeing the miner’s cabin, checking out the hydraulic mining equipment, and eventually panning for gold.  

These are the best places to search for gold in Summit County but do not be surprised if you discover a few others along the way.
