Two of the best places to head out on safari are Serengeti National Park and Masai Mara National Reserve. Serengeti is located in Tanzania, while Masai Mara can be found in Kenya. Many families like yours travel to these areas during the Great Wildebeest Migration. This is when millions of wildebeests, zebras, elands, and gazelles move from one area to another in search of water and greener pastures. During a Serengeti and Masai Mara safari, you can see this migration take place firsthand. And if you miss the action, there is still plenty to see during a family vacation while out on safari. Today, I am sharing some of the possibilities when you choose a Serengeti and Masai Mara safari for your family vacation.
On the very first day of your Serengeti and Masai Mara safari adventure, you will arrive in Arusha. Upon your arrival, you will be taken straight to Tarangire National Park. This park only has one source of water, which is the Tarangire River.
Lots of elephants live within this park. You will often find them down by the river. It is also possible to spot giraffes, bushbucks, and hartebeests. If you see those animals, be prepared for lions and leopards to be close by.
You can’t spend just part of a day in Tarangire National Park, which is why day two is also dedicated to this area. The entire day will be spent out on a game drive throughout the park. You will even eat lunch inside the park, so you don’t miss a moment of the action.
Your family won’t want to leave Tarangire National Park, but there is so much more waiting for you all on this Serengeti and Masai Mara safari. Day three will have you arriving at the Ngorongoro Crater. Imagine the memories your family will make at this geographical wonder.
So many animals live within this massive crater. Keep your eyes open so you don’t miss any of the wildebeests, gazelles, zebras, and other animals. Most of your day will be spent driving down into and through the crater.
On day four of your family vacation, it will finally be time to venture over to Serengeti National Park. The route your family takes will have you seeing the Olduvai Gorge. This is one of the most important paleoanthropological locations in the entire world. Once you have seen sections of the gorge, it will be time to enter the park.
Serengeti National Park is one of the oldest ecosystems in the world. An abundance of wildlife can be seen within this park in Tanzania. If you managed to time your family vacation just right, you may be able to watch part of the Great Migration. If not, you will still have an excellent chance of seeing plenty of animals.
The Great Migration takes place in North Serengeti National Park, which is known as Wagakuria. The game drive on this day will follow this route. Part of your day will be spent near the Mara River. Just keep an eye out for the Nile crocodiles that reside there. They can be quite active if other animals are nearby.
Since one day in Serengeti National Park is never enough, this tour offers two more days. Both days will be spent on full-day game drives. This is wonderful news because you never know what wildlife you will see each day.
Your family won’t know whether they should be sad they are leaving Serengeti National Park today or happy because they are finally going to get to see the Masai Mara National Reserve. This is a long drive, so use the time to take a nap in between sightseeing.
Want to skip Serengeti National Park and simply visit Masai Mara? Check out this Masai Mara safari itinerary!
Yes, you are seeing that right! Your family gets to spend three full days doing game drives in the Masai Mara National Reserve! If you arrive in this area between the months of July and October, you will see millions of wildebeests, gazelles, and zebras migrating between Serengeti and Masai Mara.
Your family will also spot cheetahs, African bush elephants, lions, and African leopards during these drives. You are welcome to skip one of the game drives if you wish. However, be prepared to learn you missed something incredible during the time you stayed behind.
You will have just enough time to go for a quick game drive early in the morning before it is time to go back to Nairobi and your flight home.
I can easily create a different itinerary for your family if you are interested in going out on safari in either Serengeti National Park or Masai Mara National Reserve. All you need to do is tell me what you want to see and do during your family vacation safari in Africa.
