Are you ready to plan your next family vacation? You may be, especially if you had an amazing time this past year, vacationing with your family! As a travel advisor, I can tell you it is never too early to start planning another vacation. As adults, we can always use a break from the hustle and bustle of life. And kids love the downtime they get when school is not in session. I want you to keep all that in mind, as I share a vacation destination that is popular with families like yours. North Carolina has so many thrilling activities and adventures for families. And since today is National North Carolina Day, I thought I would share some of the best foods to eat while vacationing there.
Are you ready to go on this culinary journey with me??
There are a couple different barbecue-styles in North Carolina. The Lexington-style always seems to come out on top. The barbecue sauce in Lexington is tangy with a secret spice. Plus, the meat is dipped into the barbecue sauce instead of being poured on top.
If you happen to see barbecue slaw on the menu anywhere, order it. It is basically coleslaw made with barbecue sauce instead of mayonnaise.
Blue crabs can be found in the ocean near North Carolina. The abundance of blue crabs means locals get to create lots of different seafood dishes. One of the best seafood dishes is she-crab bisque. This bisque is made from crabmeat, fish stock, sherry, and cream. You can find this bisque in many of the local restaurants in North Carolina.
North Carolina doesn’t grow as many peaches as the state of Georgia. But that isn’t going to stop this state from being known for its peach cobbler. One of the best places to eat peach cobbler in North Carolina is the State Farmer’s Market Restaurant. Arrive early, because this sweet treat sells out quickly!
Many years ago, shrimp and grits were considered a fishermen’s breakfast in North Carolina. You won’t find this dish in too many restaurants anymore. But when you do, it will be delicious.
In North Carolina, one of the best foods to eat is biscuits and gravy. The locals choose biscuits for breakfast instead of toast. And who wouldn’t love those biscuits topped with some yummy gravy?! You can order biscuits and gravy anywhere in the state. Try this dish in a couple different restaurants before deciding on your all-time favorite.
The state of North Carolina grows the most sweet potatoes in the country. Therefore, it isn’t surprising that sweet potato pie is one of the best foods to eat in North Carolina. Make sure you save room to dive into a slice after lunch or dinner. Or at least take a slice back to the hotel with you. When you are looking for a midnight snack that night, you will be happy with my suggestion.
Have you ever heard of Cheerwine? It is a cherry-flavored cola. Cheerwine was invented in the Carolinas in 1917. This is not a wine, so the kids can drink it. The “wine” in the name basically refers to the color of the drink.
While you can enjoy this cola on its own, I recommend having a float that includes Cheerwine ice cream. You may even be able to find a Krispy Kreme Cheerwine donut during your family vacation in North Carolina.
These are some of the best foods to eat to celebrate National North Carolina Day. If you can’t visit North Carolina today, you can at least enjoy a couple of these foods at home. And you can start planning your family vacation in North Carolina!
