Does your family want to fit right in when you travel to different destinations? Do you love to eat where the locals eat? Does your family love to see attractions outside the touristy areas? Do you prefer to immerse yourselves in a day in the life of a local? Well, if you answered yes to any of those questions, you are in luck! Today, I am going to share how to travel like a local in England. These tips will ensure you enjoy every minute of your family vacation in England.
The very first thing you need to know when traveling like a local in England is that you must venture outside of London. Yes, you will love visiting all the popular attractions in London. But there is a whole country waiting to be explored! So, head out into the countryside for at least a day or two.
Consider a trip to Cornwall, Derbyshire, or the Cotswolds. You won’t be disappointed with what you find when you leave the big city.
There are almost too many castles in England to count. Some of the castles are in ruins. Others have been carefully preserved. And then you have those that offer the best history of them all. If you have to choose just one castle to visit, make it Windsor Castle. It is the oldest occupied castle in the world. While the Queen is no longer there, you can still feel her presence within the walls.
There are ten national parks in England. Some of the most stunning landscapes in the entire country can be found at these national parks. You won’t find much wildlife within the parks though. The country of England simply doesn’t have the space for all those animals. Most of the land is inhabited by people. No worries, you will still love wandering around any national park you visit during your family vacation in England!
As a family, you can easily require multiple rooms within a hotel in England. The hotels can be very nice in this country. However, staying in a cottage will have you feeling more like a local. So, choose a quaint cottage that has rustic décor and exposed beams. A wood-burning stove is also a nice touch. I recommend one near the sea or at least within walking distance of an English pub.
Since you will be so close to the pub, make sure you walk there one day to enjoy a real pub lunch. Most days, the menu will be filled with fish and chips, sausage and mash, and pie. However, on Sundays, the only thing you will find is roasted dinners. Every Sunday will feature one type of meat, as well as roasted potatoes, vegetables, and other sides like Yorkshire pudding.
You cannot vacation in England and not partake in a cream tea one day. A cream tea isn’t as fancy as afternoon tea. Therefore, it is easier to learn how to enjoy it in a shorter amount of time. During cream tea, you will enjoy a scone with jam and cream, as well as a pot of tea.
Yes, it can be quite cold in England. That doesn’t stop the locals from enjoying a little time on the beach, though. Most of the locals will wait until the temperatures reach sixty degrees. You don’t need to wait, though. Simply throw on a windbreaker to keep from being blown away. And you might want to stay out of the water too. The water can be freezing most of the year.
If you are looking for the best beach to visit in England, consider any of the ones on the East Coast or the Jurassic Coast. Those are always the most popular.
If you follow these tips, your family can easily travel like a local in England. I can help you continue to travel like a local by planning all your family vacations. I never go the cookie-cutter vacation route. Instead, I personalize every vacation I plan to ensure all family members enjoy every moment. It is one of the best ways to make memories together to last a lifetime.
