Are you a fan of the winter months and want to have fun with your family with a little vacation? Yet do you want to find something that doesn’t have anything to do with skiing? I have the solution for you if you want to take a family vacation in New England. There are plenty of winter activities other than skiing that you can enjoy. And none of them have anything to do with sitting inside your hotel room or a ski lodge for hours on end!
Yes, you really can go hiking in the winter. Although it can be slightly challenging in New England. But with a few extra precautions, you will find yourself having one family adventure after another! The White Mountains in New Hampshire is an excellent choice for hiking in the winter. However, you will also find plenty of hiking trails in Vermont, Maine, and Massachusetts.
Many waterfalls do not keep flowing over the winter due to the extremely cold temperatures and limited water supply. Therefore, it is completely possible to check out frozen waterfalls when you are on vacation in New England at that time of the year. A couple of the best waterfalls to see when frozen include:
If you love fishing when the weather is nice, you will love going out to do a little ice fishing. Simply find a lake where ice fishing is allowed, cut a hole in the ice, and drop a line in. Hopefully, you will be lucky and catch a lot of fish for your dinner!
Most non-skiers who love the snow are fans of snowshoeing. This winter activity gets you out in the middle of nature for the day. Plus, snowshoeing is an excellent way to see the gorgeous views of the area you are visiting for your family vacation in New England.
You do not need to travel to Alaska to take a dogsledding ride. This wintertime adventure can be done in all the New England states. This type of winter activity will have you meeting the sled dogs, learning how to drive your own team, and participating in a dogsledding ride.
Early winter family vacations in New England can include visits to the Christmas Markets. There are plenty to choose from in this part of the country. The best part is you can check multiple items off your list when you take the time to shop at one of the Christmas Markets in New England.
A few favorites include:
These are six winter activities that you can choose to do other than skiing when you are on a family vacation in New England. Each one will have you exploring the great outdoors in the snow and the cold. Yet, you won’t be on the slopes doing an activity you do not love!
