The Chena Hot Springs are similar to almost all the other hot springs in the world. They just happen to be located in Alaska. While some hot springs are in the middle of nowhere, these springs are now part of the Chena Hot Springs Resort. Enjoying the hot springs with the whole family will be a welcome break after your days’ activities. Family vacations in Alaska are filled with adventures. But taking time off to enjoy the warmth of the hot springs is a family must do.
A Bit of History
These hot springs were discovered back in 1905. But there are signs that suggest the indigenous people used the springs well before that time. The water in the Chena Hot Springs contains many different types of minerals. A few of those minerals are chloride, calcium, magnesium, fluoride potassium, sodium, boron, and lithium. Those minerals work together to soothe aches and pains, while also healing many different ailments.
This mineral-rich water comes from deep underground and flows through cracks and fractures to fill the hot spring area. Since the water picks up the heat from the Earth, it is quite warm by the time it reaches the surface.
While minerals are present in the water, there is also Sulphur. That is what gives the water the funny smell you probably are not used to.
What To Do
During a vacation in Alaska, you can easily visit the Chena Hot Springs. But there are so many other things to do at the Chena Hot Springs Resort when you are there. One of the favorite activities is visiting the kennel where the sled dogs live. Plus, going for a dog sled ride. However, the Ice Museum is also fascinating and should be close to the top of your list.
There are many different tours you can take of the area surrounding the Chena Hot Springs, whether by foot, ATV, or up in an airplane. While you can visit this part of Alaska at any time of the year for your road trip, the best time is when the Northern Lights are lighting up the dark winter sky.
