Alaska is a fabulous destination for family vacations. The whole family can disconnect for part of each day, as you all explore nature and check out the wildlife. Unique family adventures are everywhere in Alaska. Choosing the ones your family will enjoy the most will only enhance your Alaska vacation. Today, I am going to share a few of those adventures in a sample eight-day itinerary. You can let me know if any of them pique your interest or if your family wants to do something completely different during your vacation in Alaska. I will then use that information to create a personalized itinerary for your Alaska vacation with family.
After your flight into Anchorage, the family will probably be more than ready to walk around and explore. I recommend starting at the Anchorage Visitor Center. From there, you can head to the Anchorage Museum or the Alaska Museum of Science and Nature.
You won’t be in Anchorage for long. So, it is best to make the most of the time you do have in this Alaskan city.
Day two of your Alaska vacation will have you traveling to Girdwood. This small town is surrounded by the Chugach Mountains. One of the best ways to see panoramic views of this town is by taking the Alyeska Aerial Tram.
During the tram ride, you will go up twenty-three hundred feet. Amongst the stunning views will be waterfalls and hanging glaciers.
Your second day in Girdwood will have you going out on Prince William Sound for a glacier cruise. Out on the water, you will have the opportunity to see whales, sea otters, and other marine life.
This will be an all-day adventure that will have you exhausted, yet happy, as you head back to your hotel. Everyone will be talking so much that it will be difficult to fall asleep. You may want to turn off the lights by midnight, so you get a little rest before your next adventure in Alaska!
Your family will be more than ready to see Alaska’s native wildlife at this point of your vacation. Today’s journey will take you all to the Alaskan Wildlife Conservation Center in Portage. A guide will take you through the center, sharing the stories of all the animals that live there.
All the animals at the center were either injured or orphaned. They cannot be released back to the wild. However, they are living their best lives in areas that are designed to replicate their native habitats.
Early in the morning, you will head back to Anchorage to board a plane for your flight to Fairbanks. Once you arrive in Fairbanks, you will have the rest of the day to explore, or simply rest up for the last couple days of your Alaska vacation. There are so many things to do in Fairbanks and we can discuss them all as I am planning your trip.
You cannot spend time in Alaska and not meet a few sled dogs. And of course, meeting these cute dogs also means going out on a dog sled adventure. The whole family will enjoy learning about dog mushing before heading out on the trails on a dog sled.
Back in the early 1900s, this area was popular due to gold being found in the mines. You can go back in time on this last full day of your Alaska family vacation and search for gold.
Your journey back in time begins on the Tanana Valley Railroad. You will be taken to Gold Dredge 8 to do a little gold panning. You might not hit it big. However, everyone usually leaves with a little speck of gold from their pans.
It is the last day of your Alaska vacation with your family. If you have an early morning flight, you will head out directly from your hotel to the airport. However, if you have a later flight, you may get to wander around Fairbanks a little longer to soak up the ambiance and make a few more memories.
Eight days may not be enough for your Alaska vacation with family. That is completely okay, because I can personalize your itinerary, so it includes as many days as you need in this beautiful destination. All you need to do is let me know how much time you have available to experience Alaska and make memories that matter with your family.
