April showers bring May flowers, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still hit the slopes during a family ski vacation! There are a few US ski resorts that offer skiing in spring. You simply need to know which resorts are still open during these slightly warmer months of the year. You must act quickly though because by June, even these ski slopes will lose their snow until the winter months once again.
One of the best places to go skiing in spring in New England is Killington. This mountain has a 3.050-foot drop, which is the highest vertical slope in the East. If you choose to visit this spring, you can listen to live music in between runs down the mountain. Over at the Wobbly Barn, local food and beer will be served until closing day. There are also a few different challenges and events being held for those who show up for skiing in spring.
I recommend planning this family ski trip soon though. Killington estimates their closing date will be around May 23rd.
Over in the Northwest, Mt. Bachelor will be open for spring skiing. The slopes of this mountain offer snowfields, bowls, and even deep snowpacks. Pro snowboard competitions are abundant on this mountain. So, make sure your family checks out the action if you are visiting when one is taking place. Of course, the après concert series will keep your family off the slopes on occasion as well.
This US ski resort is scheduled to close around June 1st this year. But until then, you can enjoy the Board, Bike, and Brew, Woodward Peace Park Championships, and even RendezVan.
It shouldn’t be surprising that the ski resorts in Colorado still have plenty of snow for skiing in the spring. Arapahoe Basin used to be a part of the Vail resorts in Colorado. However, that changed a few years ago and now this resort is considered one of the best for skiing in spring.
The Palivaccini chairlift is where most of the snow accumulates at this time of the year. However, it’s like a beach party down in the parking lot. Skiers are encouraged to wear their beachwear for skiing during the spring. Especially on Swimwear Day towards the end of May.
Arapahoe Basin normally closes June 1st. But if the weather allows, this US ski resort has been known to stay open until practically July.
The highest slopes on Mammoth Mountain reach over 11,000 feet. This means lots of deep snow for your family ski trip adventures! The sun may shine during the spring, but the cold nights refreeze the snow, so it is perfect for the following day’s runs.
If you’re planning skiing in spring here with your family, I recommend adding a couple other activities to your itinerary. The Woolly’s Dance Party is held every week at the base lodge. The sundeck of the Canyon Lodge is perfect for après. And no one should miss the Mammoth Caldera Burn event.
The fun at this US ski resort is planned to end around May 30th this year.
Another California ski resort that will be open long into the spring is Palisades Tahoe. April storms will continue to bring snow and cold to this region. And that means perfect ski conditions for your next family vacation.
The Mothership Classic is a popular event with pond skimming and lap racing. There are many other events being held at this US ski resort before they close down around May 23rd.
Big Sky is one of the ski resorts in the US where the snow keeps falling until late in the season. All the fresh snow equates to perfect ski conditions long after other ski resorts have closed. The tree skiing is superb. Although, not as good as some of the stunning views.
When your family is not skiing, you may be enjoying a few après or one of the multiple events. Closing day for this US ski resort is earlier than the others that offer spring skiing though. April 24th is when skiing in spring will come to an end at Big Sky.
These are the best US ski resorts for skiing in spring. If your family has been reluctant to hang up your skis for the year, take advantage of these options!
